looking for cost estimate to have a 30x40 shop built behind the house and was wanting help, ideas and suggestions on which type of metal structure i should purchase as well as what type of pad material is best used in the dfw area. i have zero experience with having something like this built and would appreciate any info that someone can share with me. in other words don’t hesitate to state what may be obvious to most as i am GREEN on the subject. i plan to store my boat in it so i will also need ideas on electric and possibly plumbing in the building as well. hopefully someone can share costs of having theirs built and mistakes made along the way.

thanks in advance

Don't skimp and buy the insulation package. Depending on location, look at running a separate meter to the shop and not slave off the house meter. Run a water line and install a floor drain. Multiple doors or windows for cross ventilation. My best investment was the main roof joist was engineered so that I could attach a chain hoist to it. That saved my back many a time.

Go with the tallest side wall you can. I skimped and went with 10' and wish I had gone with 14'. I put a loft opposite of the roll up doors and have to be on my hands and knees when I am on it. If you are planning on putting a boat in it go with a 12' door as they are smaller than the listed size. Best wishes on your shop.

I paid $20k back in 2012, but I'm sure they're more now. It depends on how many extras you want, but I'd say $25k-$35k is in the range. $25k would get you a slab and walls/roof, but probably not much else. $35k could get you plumbing, bathroom, potentially an office, taller walls/roof, etc. Shoot for $35k you might be able to get wood frame with brick.

To late but you could have asked for high lift on the door. On a 10' ceiling you could get 2 foot extra lift so the track would go back 2' less than what it is now. That way the door runs just under the ceiling joists.

Another thing is a newer boat trailer won't go in a 8 foot wide door. Most trailers are 102 inches wide now so even a 10 foot is tight.
