No one was arrested or charged for attempted theft because Cornutt and Grillot never made an official report to law enforcement. The problem is there's such a thing as entrapment, and this goes far above and beyond what's reasonable. If I catch somebody breaking into my house or stealing my stuff, they're going to be in a world of hurt. But what says they got the right thieves when they beat whoever with a baseball bat? How can they be certain it wasn't a crime of opportunity? Just saying there's a right way to do things and a wrong way.

I have zero/none, feelings of sympathy for anyone that came into their yard and tried to steal anything- If you are going to steal, there may be consequences- And in this case there was-
Kudoโs to this couple-
What has happed to you does not define who you are-
HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

I must admit that posting the videos to Youtube went above and beyond the line of stupidity ...

Yeah, but this isn't the wild west any more either.

Except they put the video on youtube and got caught. The dark of night and a shovel can be your best friend.

I think they baited whoever would try to steal the bike and beat them up in real time, as they were stealing the bike. It was a crime of opportunity for the bike stealers. It was also allegedly a crime of opportunity for the homeowners who were beating up would-be thieves.

The intention of the whole shebang was to get a video on YouTube. I'd bet my bottom dollar on that. I would be more worried about Civil suits than criminal charges. With this being in CA, you never know, though. By the way, entrapment is a legal defense against the State, not an individual.
