Navasota Reel Recovery Retreat November 1-3, 2019. Reel Recovery was founded in 2003 by a group of avid fly-fishers, inspired by their fishing buddy’s ongoing battle with brain cancer. Witnessing first-hand the beneficial impact fly-fishing provided their friend, they created Reel Recovery to provide the same opportunity for other men battling the disease. Combining expert fly-fishing instruction with directed “courageous conversations”, the organization provides men with all forms of cancer a unique opportunity to share their stories, learn a new skill, form lasting friendships and gain renewed hope as they confront the challenges of cancer. https://www.facebook.com/ReelRecovery/

That trip looked like a real good time and good way to try and put cancer in the back of the mind for a few hours.
You ever need any help let me know; flies, volunteer time, whatever. My wife went through a bad round of breast cancer, it was awful. My father went through one round of chemo for CLL but came through as if nothing happened though I know he was still scared. Glad I was retired to help take care of my wife when she went through here stuff. Cant imagine anyone go through that. If fishing helps that's great and if there's something I can do that's even better.

I was part of a very good group that bonded way back in 2016, and we lost one (the youngest) pretty quickly. Life is so complex (mine is for sure) that it has been difficult to maintain the bonds we created at that event. However, one of those bonds did lead me to spend time with a friend from that group - a week with him and another friend of his from Fort Worth, in the Florida Keys this past April. So my takeaway is that it's not about the fishing, but about the friendships. Too bad Reel Recovery can't use a staff photographer though! I'm always available!

Several months ago I applied to Reel Recovery as a volunteer "fishing buddy". The application asked if I had ever been treated for cancer. I did have a very light brush with cancer in the form of a couple of very small tumors in the urinary tract, so I was asked to first be a participant in one of the events. I went through the outing at Glen Rose about a month ago. The "courageous conversations" were painful to sit through at times, but by the end of the sessions, most partticipants felt they had gained a lot through the conversations. Although there really wasn't a great deal of time spent on flyfishing, the participants enjoyed the event overall, and I think a few converts to flyfishing were made. I'm looking forward to my time as a "fishing buddy".

This was my forth RR event at Camp Allen near Navasota, Texas. By the grace of God I have somehow avoided any major health issues for nearly sixty years so I have little experience emotionally but I've spent all my life fishing and the last 30 years or so with a fly rod. I really enjoy being able to help in this way and so far every participant has really enjoyed the time on the water. Luck would have it this time that my participant Paul A. was a fisherman and had some experience with a fly rod. We picked up the first bass of the day less than five minutes in and the rest is history. I'm looking forward to the spring RR retreat! Sorry, did not see your post before I posted mine. Your post was much better. I guess it doesn't hurt to get the word out as often as possible. Be Well! Fish On!

Thanks for all y'all do. Wife lost her father and a grandmother to cancer. My mom is a breast cancer survivor and my stepdad is a survivor although he is too weak do any trips, I don't get many vacation days a year but I could help with some flies if needed. I help guide a couple times a year with North Texas Patriot Anglers so if y'all ever needed help for a day in Broken Bow I could probably help.

Amazing group! I have worked in the medical field for 37 years now, specializing in cancer care. Currently do treatment planning for radiation patients (Medical Dosimetrist) Hats off to all of you... Nice to see folks have the opportunity to relax for a short time. I am closing in on retirement and am looking for ways to fill my time in the future. Looking to do something like this and also work with disabled vets. ( USAF veteran) Keep up the good work!
