I have shot tilapia on Whitney before, especially in Dec Jan Feb.
They were definitely more of the blue grey color than what you shot.

It's only a good cast if you catch a fish...

If you want to catch one, go to Squaw Creek. There are not enough in Whitney to target them.

I did not eat these, but I catch them at Squaw Creek often and they are very good to eat. The meat is white and not fishy tasting.

So you just decided to shoot that Talapia to see what it was,...?? hhmmmm
hmmm

Tilapia are an invasive species in Texas and should always be removed if possible.

Thanks for responding. I figured you would know if they were found in the lake. And I agree about the blue gray color.

Always the positive reply’s! Grump. Actually on Squaw it is against the rules to return this invasive species back into the lake alive regardless of how you caught it. I do not believe fishermen that aren’t targeting and keeping them will have any impact on the totals by killing the tilapia they catch but it is in the rules handed to you when you enter the gate. Pretty sure TPWD doesn’t want them getting a foothold in Whitney so remove em!

That’s also in the regulations handbook you receive when you purchase your license. They must be eviscerated or beheaded.

In all fairness, I imagine he identified it as a Tilapia before he shot it, but he didn't know what kind of Tilapia. All Tilapia are invasive. But you are correct in that you shouldn't kill something you can't identify. thumb

I saw a tilapia while bass fishing at Lake Whitney a couple of weeks ago. I was in Harbor Master marina and saw it swimming a couple inches below the surface. It did not look like it was in good shape. I didnt know there were any in Whitney til I saw that one. It was a blue grey color.

What park were you in when you shot them?

I was at Harbor Master when I shot both tilapia. I have fished Whitney for years and those are the only 2 tilapia I have seen. They most likely came from squaw creek. Typically they cannot live in water below 55 degrees. The last fish looked like a normally blue tilapia but the first fish looked very different.

I just got information back from the biodiversity center in Austin. The first tilapia is a hybrid between a blue tilapia and a Nile tilapia.

Virtually all species adapt. Tilapia have been around these parts for years. Stocked in private lakes during the summer, stocked in power plant lakes etc. I figure a certain population has adapted and will slowly take hold in all of the river system lakes.
