Going to go to be in galveston march 15-20. This will be the first time ive been to Texas. It will be my wife, 8 year old, myself, and a couple family friends. Was hoping I could get a little advice on shore fishing. Im not looking for anyones secret lures or spots. Just some general info so I know what tackle to bring. We will be staying directly on the canal and will have kayaks. We wilk be going out on a charter hopefully the day after we get there. Will shore fishing be anygood that time of year? What kind of baits should we be using? Live bait frozen bait, artificals? Would really like to catch fish to eat, especially flounder, but any thing would be better then nothing.

Thanks

try the texas city dyke and skyline drive. the dyke has two sides that offer several different types of fishing and a deep water channel at the end. that time of year ought to have some big drum hanging around looking for cracked crab or cut mullet. if you wade fish, then the road running perpendicular to the dyke has some decent wading opportunities.
don't know what canal you will be on, so i don't now which shoreline you'll be on for kayak info.

Double drop rig with fresh dead shrimp or fish bites on small 1/0 circle hook and weight depending on current/swells. Cast into the guts, not on the sand bar. Catch a small whiting and send it back out (dead or alive) for a chance at a bull drum cruising the surf.

BTW....During the time you will be here, I'd like to inform you that the BIG Black Drum (aka Big Uglies) are migrating. It will give you, your family, and your friends a chance to catch the fish of a life time. They are easy to catch also. I'd use a MH rod, 7ft., a rell that can handle a 30# mainline and maybe 40# leader line fished on bottom, using cracked crab. I like a Carolina rig for that. The legal size limit on these fish is 14-30 inches and they can get a lot bigger than that!! Catch and release on those.
After Hurricane Ike destroyed everything on the Dike..bait houses, ramps, piers, etc. The bait houses were never replaced but the City/County did a great job in the rebuilding the infrastructure . There are a couple of bait camps at the base of the Dike....Boyds One Stop being the largest with everything an angler would need. Starting every March 1st thru Nov 1st. the City charges a fee of $5 a car to get on the Dike (Fri-Sun). Proceeds go to KEEPING the Dike Clean year around. There are those scumbags that like to throw there trash on the ground, leave it there altho there are trash cans available. I might add, heed the posted Warning Signs when it comes to swimming in some areas. Hope this helps and enjoy if you decide to visit us. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

use google maps to view these spots . wade fishing at the very end of sportsman rd . parking is a challenge , pay attention to the posted areas .the end of 8 mile rd . , fish on the left side . the very east end of seawall blvd . , little bit of a walk , rough terrain . at the east and of seawall blvd . , you can take a right onto boddeker dr . it goes down to a pay beach . on the beach , favor your left and head down to the south jetty's . fish off the rocks . galveston fishing pier near 89th st. is also an option . it is a pay pier . waves usually break on top of the sand bars , try to fish in the guts between these bars . as far as what to use in these places , i've only used gold and silver 1/4 oz johnson sprite spoons and live shrimp or croaker under a popping cork or bottom rigged . a number 1 or smaller j-hook . smaller if your getting bites and not hooking anything . 6 or 61/2 med action spinning rod . san luis beach , not the pass , can be good also for those big red drum and black drum , if the sand is powder dry , be carefull driving on the beach . i've been stuck in that sand before . good luck .hope ya,ll have fun . oh , yeah , they have a bait called fish bites at academy , shrimp flavor . that , cut into small pcs , on a small hook will catch those little whiting that run the beachfront .

Not sure you’d be interested or not but I run an onshore (surf) guide service called Green Tide Surf Fishing. Basically an all inclusive fishing trip from the beach. You can check me out on Facebook or the web at greentidesf.com. All my services take place on The Bolivar peninsula so you’d have to take a ferry ride across. Let me know if you have any further questions.
