Hey guys. I need some help with a snake ID. My wife killd in the backyard this morning and I am wondering what kind it is. I know its a little mushed but we have kids that play back there and we don't take any chances with our kids. She said it started to strike at the shovel when she went to kill it. Thanks guys.

Offhand, I would say that it is a harmless snake, unless it had a diamond shape head. Word of advise...Considering the beating that your wife gave that poor snake, I'd pay attention when she speaks.

Looks like a regular ole grass snake to me, but it is hard to tell. A good pic of the head would tell if it is venomous or not. A diamond shaped head is venomous.

You bet I do pay attention Roger. They funny thing is she is from Oregon, home of the bunny hugging hippies. I'm suprised she went off on it so bad.

dekays brown snake, they are absolutely harmless, so now that you know next time you dont have to kill it!!! they make good pets also and are rather rare. there are only about 4 species of snakes in the area that are poisonous, is it too hard for everyone to learn those 4 so we dont have to kill every snake we see?!??!?!?!!

exactly, pretty common up here in the metro mess.

Was fishing my "secret pond" yesterday evening, had a 4 foot+ cottonmouth near me, she was coiled up in the grass on waters edge, just touched her with the rod tip and sent her on her way. No need in killing any snake, poisonous or not.

Two wheels or two reels, either way I'm happy.

Let's handle those bass better. Use two hands. M'kay? - How to Handle Bass

She did the right thing with kids around, regardless if it had a diamond shape head. I killed one in the garage the other night, did not have time to do anything but smash it in the head with my boot, it had darted right at my wife and 2 year old son, and that sucker was fast not fast enough though. The racoons had some fresh dinner that night.

Not a good picture but from what I see I think it is a Corn Snake. A very dead corn snake.
