Only 0.2% (1 out of 500) venomous snake bites result in death On average, 1 to 2 people in Texas die each year from venomous snake bites in Texas. wow only 0.2% huh, i bet they wished that snake was dead instead of themselves. Out of a population of 60000 (a modest sized town).2% would be 120. That is 1 in every 500 people. That is unacceptable to me. .2% doesn't sound like a small number anymore.

So if snakes bit everybody in a mid-sized town ("Snakes in Spokane"? "Snakes go to Tulane"?), 120 people would die? I had no idea the threat was so imminent. We must kill all snakes we see. And bears. Spiders, too, just to be safe. And bees. Wasps! Chili dogs with a side of cheesy tator tots! Killers!

You mis-understood the statistic. .2% of SNAKE BITES are deadly- not .2% of the population gets bit or dies from a bite. 1 out of 500 snake bites are deadly. That's not too damn bad. Are 1 out of 500 car wrecks deadly? I bet that number is quite a bit bigger. More like 80 out of 500 I bet. I'm sorry but you snake-killers are a bunch of ninnies and wooses. The animals are not out to get you. You just respect them and chances are you'll be OK. You have a heck of a lot better chance of living if you walked around ponds your whole life than if you walked down the average city street. Only fools automatically kill what they don't understand.

Only fools automatically kill what they don't understand. Mizar, you are wrong. I do understand what i am "killing" as you say, so I am not a fool. The key word you used is "chances". I do not take chances with snakes(venomous snakes). Paul, You are in good hands when fishing near me!!!

Mizar, you are wrong. I do understand what i am "killing" as you say, so I am not a fool. The key word you used is "chances". I do not take chances with snakes(venomous snakes). Paul, You are in good hands when fishing near me!!! I'm not a tree-hugger. And I've relocated many venomous snakes that are near my home. But, to go to some pond and just randomly kill a snake because it's there. To me, once you see the snake, you're not going to get bit so why kill it? I have hunted and fished all my life. I do my best not to kill a fish or an animal unless I'm going to eat it or use it in some way. IMO, to kill for the sake of killing or just because you're scared of the animal is irresponsible. There are examples of this irresponsibility all over our history. We hunted big tiger sharks when a couple people got bit. Later we found out that these sharks eat smaller sharks that are actually more dangerous. As a result, alot more people were fatally wounded by the smaller sharks. When we over-hunt predators, prey animals become overpopulated and people die when they hit them in our cars and the prey animals become a nuisance(i.e. the white-tailed deer in the State of New Jersey). This is why our Parks and Wildlife departments study animals and set limits on what we can kill. My point is, if you go around killing snakes you probably won't make a difference. But if you come on the forum and brag, and teach your children to kill every snake they see, you don't know the effect it will have on the environment. A snake will move away 99.9% of the time before you ever see it when you're walking. You can take offense if you want, but I think killing any snake for no reason is foolish. I have fished remote ponds where you can stomp on the ground and hear the snakes moving away from you every 10 feet. I had several crawl between my feet. Not one has ever acted aggressively unless I initiated the aggression. Snakes may be ugly or weird to you, but they are part of the balance of nature just like fish and deer. It's likely that your dad taught you to kill all the snakes just like my dad tried to teach me. But I live in a different time. We know more about how the world works now. "I do not take chances with snakes(venomous snakes)." But you get close enough to kill them? Why not just steer clear? I'm sorry but you can't convince me that killing snakes is right or good. I know I'm right.

.......its kinda like elk hunting, you carry a rifle for the elk and a 44mag for the bears just incase. now i can hear you now "theres a big difference between a bear and a snake" yeah about six feet and 400 pounds but a snake can kill just as fast as a bear... From the Texas Department of health website. Snake Bite StatisticsAbout 7,000 people are bitten by venomous snakes in the U.S. annually. Only 0.2% (1 out of 500) venomous snake bites result in death On average, 1 to 2 people in Texas die each year from venomous snake bites in Texas. Roughly half of all venomous snake bites are "dry." That is, the snake does not inject venom into the victim. Haven't been able to get statistics on bear attacks that result in fatalities but I'm willing to bet it's a lot higher. 1 or 2 deaths out of 23,500,000 people in the State of Texas. I'm really shaking now! KILL ALL THE SNAKES!!!! We'd be better off shooting all the stupid drunk drivers in the state. That would save a he77 of a lot more lives.
