My bass club has gone there most of the last 15 years. I don't think we have ever had anyone weigh in a 6 pounder. Most of the time two fish for around 7-8 pounds wins although we have had a limit or two. There has to be a reason why fish over 18 inches are hard to come by.

didnt weigh either one but i should have after talking to Steven at R&R he said he hasnt heard of a fish over 7 pounds in the last 10 years. we went back the next 2 days and absolutely crushed them and weighed many over 5. threw back alot that we didnt weigh but eye balled to be at 5 or better .biggest on the scale was 5.13 i think. Honestly our best 20 fish in that 3 day bite went 100 pounds. I should have weighed those 2 big ones i caught but didnt know how truly special a 7 pounder from welsh was. i can almost garentee that one was 6+ and thw other was flirting with 7 but. no weight. we will never know.

Thinking about heading out there tomorrow, what’s the ramp situation. Still ok to launch?

We’ve caught several over 6, but I can only remember a couple in the low 7s. The biologists say their lifespan is shortened due to the hot water. Their metabolism runs high all year long. Monticello constantly put out bass over 7, and look at squaw it used to put out big bass all the time. I think it has much more due to not getting stocked by TPWD

These lakes are within 20 minutes of each other, both have very similar structure yet Monti always kicked out bigger fish both pre and post power plant shutdown. The question is why? The quality on Welsh has improved over the last 4-5 years but still isn't anywhere near Monti. I will say the numbers seem to be better on Welsh most of the time. I'm gonna ask the biologist for both lakes and get his take.

I think it has much more due to not getting stocked by TPWD Monticello is also 60% larger than Welsh, and the water temps didn't consistently stay as warm as Welsh. There are more fish per acre in Welsh than just about any other lake that I know of, and they're all fat. I don't see how stocking could be the issue. I'm just passing along what the biologists told me. Makes sense to me.

One thing I think should be considered, F1 and F2 strain bass doesn’t have a play in the Genetics as it once dominated in the beginning. More or less more native then the latter.

I don't think this statement is accurate. The Florida strain has remained pretty constant in that lake for a long time. The last published survey (2015) showed Florida alleles ranged from 89.0 to 93.5% and Florida genotype ranged from 17.0 to 65.0%. They just finished another survey about 6 weeks ago. I'm guessing they probably stayed pretty consistent. Monticello has even higher numbers on the Florida strain. Their last report, also in 2015, had 37% of their creel classified as pure Florida.
