You want a high buoyancy so when you do feel it you can let up reeling a little and it will work its way up some. You want the crankbait to hit the top of the brush pile no more than a foot into it. Example you are in 20' and the top of the brush pile is 10' you want that crankbait to go in a 10-12' range. And if you have to do not be afraid to put a size smaller hook. You will still catch them.

When the crankbait can't get through the ice

Is there a secret to fishing brush piles and crankbaits or is losing them just part of it? All I seem to do is get hung up. I lose Crankbait after Crankbait. I get a decent percentage unhung but still manage to lose way too many. Fished today and lost a brand new one on the first cast. I have Hummingbird 360 which I really like but I seem to lose way more crankbaits now knowing exactly where to cast. Try an extending lure retriever, worth the price! Boy, are they? Also great for scratching off wasp nests around the house and retrieving balls and frisbees from trees.

You can rip the split rings off a big crank with 40 braid plus it has the same approx diameter of 10# mono. Unless you are trying to get a bait down below 25' braid will work fine. https://youtu.be/Q9D87ltOPZg

But Ken, bass won’t hit a crank bait fished on braid. They can see the line coming from that 21’ boat over head with a trolling motor humming and a depth finder clicking and.........

When it is cold I just add a slip weight up the line and slow down the retrieve.

Boat is ready, got a bucket full of crankbaits and knee will be ready in a couple of weeks.
