Have any of you switched over, either way, from one to the other? Which do you think is better? I’m trying to figure out what to install in a new build. Thanks

my water heaters / central heat / and stove are all propane. Was all electric in house before this one. I'll pick propane over electric all day / every day.

A 14 SEER AC with natty gas central heat is what I have and probably the most affordable.

Propane is expensive. If natural gas is available...that is the way to go.

Most heat pump systems can provide heat down into the 20s, then switch over to aux heat coils (resistant coils) to
Provide heat...then it gets expensive.

Not cheap, but there are hybrid systems that use the heat pump down to a preset temp....then switch over to propane.

Comfort wise...propane is more comfortable than the heat produced by a heat pump. Which system makes more sense economically is up to you....

Living in Centex my heat pump works great.

If living in N. Texas I'd probably go natural gas or electric.

Here in podunk our house is heated by a natty gas water heater that flows through coils over blowers to provide central heat in the house. Very efficient and cheap to operate.

I work for a home builder and have purchased all my heating and cooling equipment from the same guy for 16 years. He's getting my business either way so there isn't any reason for him not to be honest. He says natural gas if available, heat pump, propane and then electric.

Live in North East Texas and we have a heat pump for down stairs and regular ac with resistance heat for upstairs. The upstairs gets lots of heat from the downstairs unit so it doesn't kick on much. That said, when it gets in the 20's the heat pump struggles, in the teen's you better have the fire place roaring. Also the house just does not feel as warm as a house heated with a natural gas system, I don't know why but is is different.

We have a 20 seer heat pump in one house, and gas in the other, I like both. The heat pump does not put out as hot of air as the gas does when you put your hand by the discharge. It works well in our house, It was in the teens a few weeks ago and I was not disappointed. The gas heater is a beast and very economical, I guess I like it a little better. As far as the monthly operating cost, both are reasonable, roughly $65/month for each one.

1st choice - natural gas
2nd choice - heat pump
3rd choice - wood stove
....
18th choice - propane

My old boss has a propane furnace. In the 2012 super bowl week when we had 2 weeks of ice on the roads and temps between 15 and 35 for about 12-13 straight days, he burned over $1,000 in propane. My electric bill was like $200.

Propane has gotten cheaper since then, but it could jump back up any time. Everyone has electric - they'll never let it get that expensive without government intervention.

If "government intervention" was a thing, all of the cable monopoly executives would/should be shot before a firing squad.

I don't recall the government helping anyone since the ATT breakup of all of the bell telephone companies.
