And it doesn't always have to be a deep crank. I’ve been close to taking “their bait”, they are proud of that thing. Anyone used it yet? I just got my order in from tackle warehouse. If you think that crank bait is expensive check out the prices of large swim baits. LOL

Fishing deep has always been a mystery to me. Do you fish deep in the Winter because the fish want to get away from colder surface water? Do you fish deep in the Summer because the fish want to get away from the hotter surface water? Or both?

I believe a portion of the fish population lives deep year round, with the short exception of the spawn. Those fish on the whole are less pressured and as a result larger on the average.

LOL Expensive, as in, “does it do anything differently than all these did”??? $15 for another crank that might end up on the reserve list. Now if a few guys use it and say that it’s special, I’ll grab one; but to just take their word for it? Nah.

Just want to see what the consensus of the group is here. Is there a water temp you stop throwing deep cranks at? At what temp do you think their effectiveness starts to decline? Anything below 32 degrees...At that point, you are punching ICE

I have way more crank baits then the ones in the picture, but then again I am a tackle nut.

I don't think the water is ever too cold to get bit on a crankbait. One day me and a buddy got bored after several days of bitter cold temps here in NTX. We decided to grab a rod and drive over to a small pond nearby. It was not a pond loaded with fish. We fished it a lot in the warmer months. It had been so cold there was a thin layer of ice around the perimeter of the entire pond.
This day the sun was shining and it had warmed up to about 40 degress. I recall throwing a chrome Rattletrap across the pond and having it land on the ice. I thought, "That's a first..."
I drug it off and let it sink to the bottom. As I was reeling it back a fat 3 pounder grabbed it. We caught several more nice fish in the next 30 mins doing the same thing. A light bulb went on for me that day.

Is there a secret to fishing brush piles and crankbaits or is losing them just part of it? All I seem to do is get hung up. I lose Crankbait after Crankbait. I get a decent percentage unhung but still manage to lose way too many. Fished today and lost a brand new one on the first cast. I have Hummingbird 360 which I really like but I seem to lose way more crankbaits now knowing exactly where to cast.

When you feel the line hit just slowly pull the crank like you would a c-rig and “worm” it through the brush. That’s how I do it and it works out well. Still get hung up just not as much. When you do always have a plug knocker handy.

I caught a fish out of Fairfield on a day that was as a high of 31. We were putting 2 to 3 truck together to be able to pull the boats out. The wind was blowing about 5 to 10 and it was BRUTAL fishing. 3 clubs that fished and only 2 keeper bass were caught, both out of our club. Too bad we didn't enter the other clubs Ts as well. LOL. OF course, I thCB on every trip I take As long as the water is not frozen hard, I will be throwing a CB, once in a while in every trip. Caught some GREAT FISH DOING IT, TOO. Not as big other Than all baits, all sizes, all depths.Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Clearly many others have “discovered” that crankbaits work in the winter long ago. No “discoveries” here. These guys are way better fishermen then me and most of their stuff is very informative but just remember that you are getting your information from a commercial!

Spend less than $10 on https://www.walmart.com/ip/Bullet-Weights-2oz-Disc-Sinker-8-sinkers/16889111and a package of big interlock snaps and make 8 lure retrievers. I made 8 last year and then captained two HS teams for a whole year and still have a couple left. Have saved countless number of crankbaits over that time. Used them about 20 times on Falcon last weekend alone fishing with my oldest son. So, they work getting them out of rock as well.

I have one of the extendable lure retrievers which has saved a bunch of baits but I don’t always get it out and some brush piles are too deep for it to reach.
