Lake Lavon Report:
I have always seen catfish on Side Imaging when searching for sandies and crappie. So I knew exactly what they looked like on DI and SI. Facebook ruined all the creeks I guide Winter Crappie at on the banks, in the creeks. To many people in Yaks, Boats and on the banks. So, now I have been doing catfish trips on Lavon.
We have been having a blast! Bait Pattern- as of the last week ——> Using a tapped net in 24-30 ft of water and getting all the fresh bait I need for the day in 1-3 throws. I tapped a new net by myself today in under 20 mins. Very tedious but the results are greatness. A couple throws today in 26 foot of water, I pulled 10 pounds. But most throws are anywhere from 5 to 15 baits.
I run a Solix 12 and. Ultrex iPilot trolling motor. The fish have been crusing a particular depth and not really straying more than 1-2 ft out side the depth I find them in. Right now I’m finding them at 27 foot Right in the middle of the gizzard shad that are hugging the bottom. . They might stray into 26 and 25 foot, or they might stray 28 to 29 foot. But they’re really liking that 27 foot.
This is where the ipilot comes in handy. I sit at the Solix and control the boat with the remote and watch the Side imaging. When I see fish or group of them, I try and drag the baits right over them. The wind has been crazy. No wind. Or lots. Or just not blowing the right way. It’s working out great for me.
Yesterday, we got a 21 and a 22 within 10 mins of dropping on them. Started the trip great. It’s so cool to see the fish you want to catch, and then catch them!
I’m using 25 lb mono with Abu G’s, 2/3 oz weights Santee Rigged. I had planer boards, brand new. But the kids have hidden them to a point I finally gave up looking for them. I think they probably put them in the trash can.
While we are drifting, I’ll dead stick some slabs or jigs and catch sandies and crappie as we pass over them. Extra meat for the freezer
Catching some good eater blues too.
We release everything over 10 lbs on my trips.
More reports coming.
If you need fresh bait, I usually have it on me. Sometimes another guide comes through and wipes me out. But most of the time, I know they are coming.
I have a couple dates left this month for guided trips. ( November )
