Found this old knife, what kind of blade is this? It's not sharp and doesn't appear to have ever been sharpened. [Linked Image]

Looks like a Barlow type knfe with a gut hook for cleaning birds.

I bet you get year, make, and model if you post that pic in the hunting forum in the knife section.

This is the correct answer. Farriers knife.

When I showed reining horses when I was a teen, I thought of shoeing horses as a career because of what my guy would charge us for custom forged sliders. Then I found out that they were called 'Farriers' so decided to go a different route.

Very similar, but the bend on the end is different. It's definitely a specific tool, not a blade.

This is what I have been hearing from some friends that have horses and cattle. They say this hook wouldn't work well for hooves. They are leaning towards it being a small game knife and that is a "gut hook". I dunno.

This. Too sharp a point for a hoof pick, plus that angling-out of the tip. DW has a farrier jackknife and the hook pick is little more than the bent tip of a screwdriver, not as wide as just a hoof pick tool because it's a jackknife, but flat nonetheless.

Fishing, a man knows a serenity of soul and peace of mind that he finds in doing nothing else, and it makes no difference whether or not he catches anything. The mind of a true fisherman is not on petty subjects.

That one is very intriguing. Its hard to say without knowing the size. If its around the size of a pee it would be a button hook. If its the size of a dime it would bee a glove hook or possibly a bird hook but those are usually straight J shape. If it's the size of a nickel and larger it would be a shoe or boot hook but i must say i have never seen one with the tip bent out like that on purpose which it looks like it is. Its not a gut hook or the inside of the hook would be sharp and i doubt it is a hoof pick as that design looks pretty impractical. Looking forward to see what it is.

It kind of looks like a type of knife sailors used to carry. The hook was used to loosen and pull apart knots.

That makes the most sense yet. There is no sharp edge whatsoever on it, you can't see it well in the picture but it's pretty much squared off along the entire inside edge.

Nope, that would be too easy.

I still believe it is a type of farriers knife, but it might come in handy with braid backlash on a freezing, wet day.

Assist hook to put on your boots? Is it sharpened on the inside or dull and flat?
