I will say the old Evinrudes are phenomenal. We have an '83 on our ski boat. Put a carb kit on her a year or so ago. Runs a little rough first start up but smooth sailing after that.

one of the best outboards you can have, taken care of they last pretty much forever.
I had a 96 johnson 175 fast strike, beast of an engine on a champ 184.

Had a 1995 model, awesome motor!!! Disconnect VRO and go to premix. Motor is a bit thirsty but was flawless, ran one for 15 years until it was totaled in a vehicle accident. Wish I still had it.

I have a 95' Intruder that runs like a Champ. I use Yamaha ring free in my gas along with the oil (disconnected vro) and have no problems with it.

I had that exact motor on my 93 stratos. My step dad was the original owner and then i bought from him. I sold the boat 2 years ago to upgrade to a bigger boat. It still running fine. Maybe a little stubborn on cold morning but always started and never any major problems.

Because they are prone to failure. SAY SOME OF THE PEOPLE. I have owned several John/Rude V6 engines with the VRO system and the oil system never gave any trouble. It's an easy by-pass if you want to go that way. Pain in the rear to mix fuel and you're always guessing about the right amount of oil when you do.

Last boat had a '97 225 Vindicator (just a bigger Intruder basically) and were original owners. New boat has a 225 Optimax that we've had for 4 years now.
I've had more problems with that Optimax in 4 years than that Evinrude ever gave all the way up to selling it in 2015. All I can say is the next rig will be Evinrude powered. First AND last Mercury for my [censored].
And the VRO never gave any issues by the way, although I would honestly these days recommend bypassing it. It's just insurance.

But yes, a definate pain in the [censored] though.

If you’re mechanically inclined, lap the reed blocks and install Chris Carson Racing reeds. The difference is amazing and it will actually run quieter as well as smoother. Did it on my 94 175. Best mod ever.
