Those fish in the bowfishing boat are all Buffalo, not Carp. Buffalo are native here to Texas. As for Carp effecting gamefish populations - I'll leave you with this link with plenty of studies cited. https://americancarpsociety.com/science-misinformation-on-the-speciesTLDR: There are a huge number of studies on Common Carp, looking at many aspects of biology, ecology, and cultivation. Many studies conducted in both the USA and Australia have been conducted with the ultimate goal of Common Carp eradication in mind. Like with any other fish species, Common Carp can causes issues in some situations and under these situations management is required. However, under many, perhaps most, situations Common Carp have little or no effect on other species and other factors are the cause of undesirable environmental conditions.

Dang that’s a herd of carp. We almost sunk the boat getting across the lake with all that weight. Had about 2" of freeboard left. And there were carp early along with the buffs, but as it got later we saw more buffs than anything else. Thus, the carp are at the bottom of the stack and kicked under the front deck to make room.

Post this in the rough fish section of the forum as well and hang on.... No reason to wait till it is posted in the rough fish section...you can "hang on" right here lol. Whitney is a great example of a lake where buffalo, carp, largemouth, striper, and sunfish all co-exist in harmony. To some your haul may seem like a lot of fish, but a single buffalo can lay hundreds of thousands of eggs and there was a really good buffalo spawn this year. I have caught lots of buffalo 8-12" long at Whitney this year. Only 2 of those fish have to reach breeding age to sustain the population. Fish management is a science and art, and you can manipulate a lake to produce the desired species. Personally I enjoy catching big bluegill, but I also like it when a 20-pound carp takes me well into the backing on my fly rod. There is normally room for multiple species in our Texas lakes.

I don't think there's any denying that a little over 2000 lbs of fish in 4 hours IS a lot of fish... But no I don't think it's changing a thing in a lake the size of Whitney. We didn't kill even 10% of what we saw in the lights that night. They were everywhere in that flooded vegetation.

I agree from a fishing standpoint it IS a lot of fish. I was just addressing the original question about whether rough fish hurt sunfish. If you can shoot 2000 pounds in one night and the sunfish in Whitney are thriving it just goes to show they can live together.

Wow. What does one DO with all that fish in one night? or day? My arm would hurt filleting that much in a single session. I like to do what I can to help out.... That haul is over a ton out of Whitney in 4 hours.

On a lake that small a 20-25 boat numbers tournament could make a big difference. Probably not legal on that lake but I've never even heard of it so who knows.

I prefer larger lakes and areas with no houses and also shoot where there are no campers on the bank either. That way we don't bother anyone else while we are out. Makes life easier for sure.
