I went hog hunting this past weekend and here is the story and some action shots below. There were 3 of us; me with a 30-06 semi auto rifle, my buddy with a Cannon XT SLR digital camera, and my other buddy with a compound bow with broad heads. The whole point of this hunt was for my buddy to get his first hog with a bow. He also didnt want to sit in a stand with a feeder and wait for the pig to come to him, he wanted to go out and find the pigs and get close enough to shoot one with the bow. I was there for backup and the camera was there to hopefully get some cool shots of the whole thing. Anyway after about 45 minutes of walking and seeing plenty of signs of hogs, but no hogs we came up to a river crossing and found some rooting in the mud. The camera and I stopped in our tracks and crouched down about 30 yards from the pigs while the bow stalked around to the right to get within 10 yards. The camera and I could not see the pigs at this point because we did not want to spook them before the bow got a shot. We just watched our buddy with the bow for our cue. He drew, held, and released and we heard a squeal. We stood up and I drew my rifle and got lost in the private world of a scope for a while. I watched the big sow watch me for about 20 seconds through the scope hoping that she would flee down the river bank (I did not want to drag a big hog around to the truck and clean it that day) but she decided to charge and I had to drop her with a single shot to the head. My buddy with the bow shot one of the smaller pigs in the back and if you look closely in the pictures you can see the wound and the arrow stuck in dirt on the left bank. Both pigs were recovered and not wasted. The smaller pig weighed about 20 pounds and was choosen so that it could be smoked whole. I also did not post the kill shot on the sow.

So this is pretty much the view from my scope, the camera was just over my left shoulder. The pig that was hit by the arrow is behind the sow in this pic, the sow has just now noticed me and the hair on her back is standing up.

This is her with her head lowered thinking about charging, we estimated her weight at just over 200 lbs.

In this one you can see the wound on the smaller pig and the sow thinking weather to flee or charge.

And in this one you can see that she decided to charge. I took the shot with the rifle just about a millisecond after this picture.

I hope you enjoy, I just thought that these were some neat action shots that you dont get to see everyday.

Pics and story go well together. Maybe because I have been in a similar situation, I could "feel" your hunt. Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words guys. This was definitely the most intense hunt that I have ever been on. Sitting in a blind with a feeder just doesnt even come close to comparing to this. We were hunting about 10 miles South of Cross Plains, TX. Cross Plains is about 120 miles West and South of Fort Worth.

In this pick I tried to point out the wound and the arrow

Very nice story and pictures! My dad likes to hunt the hogs down in Palestine. I like the meat from the smaller hogs, but I'm not fond of the bigger ones unless it's made into jerky. Also, in all the hogs my dad has brought home, I've never seen a fair colored one. Always a dark brown or jet black. Interesting.

Is that Turkey Creek or the Bayou? I am from around there and know that the hogs are thick.

Great pics and story.

Those look like piglets....or something. What happens to the surviving litter without the mom?
