Bald Cypress trees do no decay. This is why they grow under the water and why the wood is used to make coffins.

BUT...........Did you know............

That Bald Cypress trees are actucally drought tollerant! You can still find some in the hill country and they grow on just 20 inches a year. A couple of hundred years ago we had a North American Parrot which was the only animal that could crack and spread the seed of the Bald Cypress. Since that bird went extinct the only way it can propoagate is if a seed falls in the water. That is why nowadays they only grow in the water.

ALSO.............

Its closest relatives are the Redwoods and Giant Sequoias of California. Thats why Bald Cypresses get so BIG. It is also related to the Montezum Cypress. Check out this link;

Don Henley has been a supporter of Lake Caddo conservation for years. I believe he feels that impounding the states only natural lake is ruining it. Many think he may be right.

Nice pics BassBorder. And interesting facts on the parrot-seed thing JasonJ.
I'm fixing to go down to Caddo for four days. First timer. I'll be fishing and camping out of a canoe. Any tips on fishing or access to good camping spots? What are good lures for pike? When is mating season for gators?

My Uncle Clarence Fason was the postmaster in Karnack for many years and my grandparents, Roy and Ruby Fason lived on Caddo, (Uncertain), from 1960. I spent every summer with them and caught a lot of fish in Caddo. Like anyone that has been there I have hundreds of pictures and love to just put them on the computer and hit screen show.
At one time I attempted to buy Shady Glades but didn't come to pass.
My brother and I still go there several times a year to fish and remember.
This is without a doubt the most beautiful lake I have ever been on.
The sad thing is that the lake has problems with mercury poison so the consumtion of fish is not recommended anymore.
If you get the chance to visit Caddo, take it, as the people are some of the sweetest and friendliest you will find anywhere.

Don Henley has invested a huge amount of money, time, and influence for Caddo Lake. He was instrumental in having Caddo Lake declared a protected wildlife area and he also fought to prevent Marshall, Tx. from draining and selling much needed water from Caddo.
In addition, Don Henley also bought the old Flying Fish hotel, restaurant, and airstrip located in Uncertain, Tx.

Awesom pics! I drug the boat to caddo back in March. It was my first time there and I fell in love with the lake.

Also, it looks like Bass Border got some new electronics between his first pic of government ditch and his second.

I have been going to Caddo and staying @ Crips camp for the past 5 years and every year it is breath taking. I just came back and the lake is up and man was it packed. The people out there are top knotch, friendly down to earth folks.
