I haven't fished it in a while but usually is really good right now if you can fish it. The waves today and tomorrow are going to make it almost impossible to fish. Sat and Sun look better. Spanish should be showing up in herds in a few weeks.

Thanks for the update. I'm taking my alumna-craft jon boat out for the first time in salt water this weekend. If it was not too rough, I'll be trying to motor out to the end of the jetty,

If it was not too rough, I'll be trying to motor out to the end of the jetty, Gammaray, between the swells and boat traffic it may not be safe to take a jon boat to the end of the jetty. If you try, be very aware of the boat traffic and keep your life jacket on.

Thanks for the update. I'm taking my alumna-craft jon boat out for the first time in salt water this weekend. If it was not too rough, I'll be trying to motor out to the end of the jetty, I wouldn't take a jon boat anywhere close to that area unless the waves were a foot or less. Conditions there can change in a matter of minutes. I've been in a 24' center console Pathfinder in middle of the channel there and the waves were too big and too close for me to even turn around. Looking at the surf forecast no way I would even think about running to the jetties in jon boat this weekend. If you do make sure you have a quality PDF AND a quality marine radio. Don't go unless you are completely prepared. I haven't fished it in a while but usually is really good right now if you can fish it. The waves today and tomorrow are going to make it almost impossible to fish. Sat and Sun look better. Spanish should be showing up in herds in a few weeks. What's making the waves so high, the wind in general, or is a distant storm The winds. They've been on a steady blow for what seams like months now.

Maybe that cold front will make it to Port A next week and nip the winds in the bud.

I hope it does I'm ready for some cooler weather. One forecast is showing it coming in late Monday or early Tuesday of next week. Pretty much a guess at this point tho.

Thanks Guys. I guess I won't be going out to the jetty unless it is flat calm. I have a 17ft. With 25 hp outboard. I'm primarily a bass fisherman. I have 20 years boating experience, but this will be the first time to go out in my boat at Port A. Any tips or advice to stay safe.? I want to fish around redfish bay and stay out of the channels as much as possible. Would it be safer to launch at aransas pass instead of port a? Last month my wife and I went out in Kayaks and did not even think about crossing the channel to lighthouse lakes. We launched across the road instead and had as great time with no waves and very little boat traffic.

Unless you are staying on the island, it will be more convenient to put in at Conn Brown or Cove Harbor and not deal with the ferry. Tide is really high right now so you should be able to fish much of the flats in your boat. Wind forecast for the weekend is pretty good so the bay should not be too rough and you should be able to fish the outside of Trailer, Mud, Ransom and Dagger islands. If you want to venture farther then look at East Flats and south to Shamrock Island, along with the flats and back channels in that area.. Looks like a great weekend to get out and learn the area.

Please take my advice, and DO NOT TAKE A FRESHWATER BOAT INTO SALTWATER !!!
It will never be the same. There are places on your boat that will corrode that you never thought of. Like the Bilge Pump, and the trailer if it is painted. Tube frame trailer .... just forget about it.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

My Dad and I would take his Tri-Sonic to the Port-A every year to King Fish. We would always coat everything we could with WD-40. Worked great. When we got back I would always power wash it down and flush the engine with fresh water. The only trouble we ever encountered was the starter. Had to replace it every year. Got real good at it after a couple of years.
