When I was younger, my grandpaw and I were told by a game warden that one of the easiest ways to catch gar was with a frayed section of rope. If you’re not familiar with the method, the idea is that the gar’s hundreds of needle-sharp teeth will get tangled in the frayed rope when they bite it. After discovering there are gar in a local pond behind the sams club here in College Station, I decided to make a few rope lures. I used 6-inch sections of rope, melted one end (& let it dry), and then frayed out the rest of the section before combing through it a few times with a brush. Finally, I added 2 small split shots to the head as weight, one on each side. I tried them at the sams club pond but didn’t manage to get any bites, even though they looked extremely lifelike moving through the water (they remind me of streamer flies from fly fishing in Colorado, except much larger). However, I had bite after bite from spotted gar while fishing Brays Bayou during a trip to Houston last weekend. This is one of the two I managed to land. Almost every cast I had gar following the lure back.

Awesome! I've never had luck with those, but I have used wire snares several times with success fish

Catch and release. The dream - to catch one of every species of Freshwater fish in our great state! If only I can resist Carp...

Check out Richard Gene on YouTube. He shows step by step how to create a hook less rope jig for gar. Then shows you how to fish it. I keep hoping to bump into him and Elmo someday on Lake Guntersville.

Actually Richard Gene’s video is where I finally learned to make and fish the rig! Ever since that game warden told me it was possible I wanted to try it but never knew specifically how to make and fish it, but once I saw Richard Gene’s video I had to try it. I also want to try his rubber band method for bass fishing w/ live crawfish.
