Headed over to Baton Rouge on Friday in search of a photo. Haven't seen this photo in 40+ years, but my oldest sister says it's still there. It's a simple photo of a sailor standing on the focsle of a ship. The photo is black and white and the very fit sailor is wearing dungarees and a t-shirt, and he appears to have just finished up a working party of some sort. The ship, LCS (L) (3)-128 is somewhere in the South Pacific during the last months of the war in 1945.

The sailor was my father, all of 18. He had sailed from Leyte to Okinawa to Saipan to Enewitok Atoll all the while performing clean-up duties and dodging kamikaze attacks.

Not sure why I feel the urge to find this photo, but it's very important to me. Maybe it's because I surpassed my old man in age. I'm 56, he died at 55 when I was 17. I joined the Navy to honor him and with Veterans day right around the corner I just got to thinking about that photo. It's supposedly buried in the back bedroom of the house I grew up in. I hope I find it......

Hope you find it. But don't just get that one, get all of the old photos you can find and get them scanned to a disc (take a laptop and a scanner with you). And try to get as much information about who/when/where the shot is about that you can and scan the notes as well. Then you can share them all the family and friends.

I did something like this for my Wife last year on her birthday.

Best of luck on your quest. I just visited with my older sister last month (she lives in Illinois) and made copies of a lot of old family photos, including this one of my father taken just after the war ended. He died when I was only 3 years old, so I never had a chance to talk with him about his service flying on B-17s over Europe in the Army Air Corp, just heard stories from the rest of the family. When you consider all that they accomplished both during and after the war, they were clearly the greatest generation.

Would be neat to see.
My dad tells me that my last Uncle who is still alive served as a MP and personal driver for Eisenhower has some incredible photos that I would love to get ahold of and have copies made of. Dwight would tell him to take as many pictures as he could. Some were even from the concentration camps. My dad says some will make you sick.
