I don't how they can ship 50 lb bags of dog food and make money. Shipping cost have to be close to the cost of the product. I know they are not profitable right now. Maybe they never will be. Maybe there business plan is to sell food as a loss leader and make money off other products. Since I manage a $200m+ freight budget I know a little bit about shipping costs.

I don’t know why anyone is wondering. The founders will go public and make billions. Prospectus will state no profit is ever expected. Worked for Uber and Snapchat so why not.

They aren’t making money and probably never will. They’re not big enough to do that, like Amazon is. Although amazon has started making a profit overall. Not from the retail side, but from their web services division. Before that, it was all investor driven to stay afloat.
We use chewy and it’s great. I hope they never go away. But I don’t get it either.

We use them for some of our dogs prescriptions. Usually we buy enough stuff to cover the $49 to get free shipping. I'm sure those pills are a lot like soft drinks at sonic, they don't cost 1/10th of what they charge.

Buddy of mine used chewy and recently cancelled due to the loss of his buddy. Chewy reached out as to why he cancelled and he explained the situation and they refunded his last order with out him even asking and sent a nice card. I do not care how they do it but they are doing it right IMHO

I don't know who my UPS guy hates more, Chewy or my wife. She orders three 50# bags at a time when they have a sale.

I've used Chewy off and on for near 5 years … 3 years with my old boy until he passed and now for 6 months with these two goofy pups.
BTW, when I called and canceled my auto delivery the rep asked me why and I told her my old boy had died … few days later we got flowers in a vase delivered with a nice note.
On the cost thingy, maybe the retail outlets are ripping everybody off with huge mark ups while Chewy is making modest profits. The cost and convenience makes them a no-brainer.
Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools

Also, they must be paying a premium for shipping since most times I order it there the next day.

I use Chewy. They are good.
I applied to work for them when I was transitioning out from Citibank. They were looking for a Director for their Customer Service Department. Talked to the guy who ended up getting that role and I am happy I did NOT get it. He said its quite a mess, very very high turnover, long hours and the pay is sh**.
Thats his review though. I cant say first hand anything...except they have good prices and I have been very happy with them for several years..since I got my dog.

I do think the retail outlets are over charging..
fyi if you link you chewy account to a non profit like the local animal shelter they will donate a percentage to them on every purchase you make!!
