This will probably hurt the mojo rather than help, but there are a lot of olds on here so...

I think we live in one of the only countries that allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise prescription drugs direct to consumer. I doubt it has a huge impact on price relative to R&D, advertising to Doctors etc. However, what are your thoughts on this? Does it undermine doctors? Any OT medical professionals with industry insight?

I think that insurance companies affect it more than anything. Remember when that lady jacked up the price of epipens ? Illinois just passed a law mandating that insurance companies cover them. So , there goes capitalistic price control.

I'm more thinking along the lines of if the advertising causes consumers to think they need a certain types of med, or have a certain condition instead of taking the advice of a medical professional.

I have mentioned some medicine that I saw on TV to my Dr. Before and he kind of blew it off. Several of those meds they advertise will cost $300 or more a month.

Epinephrine is cheap. So basically they are selling the mechanism.

I can't imagine getting on a medication advertised on TV after listening to all the side affects. Could cause vomiting. diarrhea, headaches, insomnia, dizziness, dry mouth, hair loss, etc. Really and you want me to try it?

I tend to trust that my Dr is up to date informed and knows what meds I need-

What has happed to you does not define who you are-

HOW you react to what happens to you DOES!

When the little blue pill and the couple in the bath tub hit tv olds lined up for blocks. Retirement homes became modern day sodom and gamora. I think that started the whole advertising craze.

I always laugh at most of the commercials when one of the first things they say just before the side effects is "don't take it if you're allergic to it." How do you know til you take it?

It used to be illegal for drug companies to advertise on TV. Same held true for doctors and lawyers. Too bad it still not that way.

This is food for thought but it may run afoul of the first amendment. However, with the law of unintended consequence it would certainly cause the price of all forms of digital communication to go up in price to the consumer. The other solution is: if you don’t like it don’t use the drugs.
