I use the orange/yellow square type marker buoys. Say I find a brush pile, I'll throw the buoy out usually 10-15
feet away from the pile, just as a reference. Is there any way to keep them from drifting away from where they were thrown
when its windy or waves....?? realmad

It's not the amount of weight. Every time a large wave comes by, the bouy will rise up on the wave and flip a time or two and let out more line. The longer you fish the further away the marker is from where you dropped it.
Not an issue on Calm days, but can be a pain when fishing on days with 15mph or higher winds.

I have wrestled with that same problem. Not the best solution but one that I found works most of the time. I had to buy a couple more markers but they arenโ€™t to expensive

I mostly fish less than 30 ft of water so I take several markers and unroll one to 10โ€™-15-20-25-30 and 35โ€™ and tie them off at that depth. I then mark the depth on each one. Using the depth finder if the water is 25โ€™ I throw the 30โ€™ marker and so. Trying to always throw the marker with 5โ€™ or more extra depth than the water is.
Will they actually be straight up and down? No but they are close and stay put.

That's a good idea!

Curious what your results were.

I use some marker buoys from time to time as well, not to highjack the thread but to maybe even take it one step further. I hate having to wind that sucker in every time....is there not a faster way to do it? Or maybe a different kind of marker out there that will retrieve in half the time? I tried gorilla gluing a philips head screw in the side of one and using a compact portable power screw driver in hopes to wind it in fatser....screw just spun on me.....any ideas? May need to try that same thing again but secure the screw better.....

There used to be a kit that was sold that included a battery operated screwdriver and a buoy with a hex head drive. They were no faster than winding up by hand. I still use mine in the winter just so I don't have to keep my hands wet.

More weight will help. The heavier the weight the less the waves will move it. It also wont drift as far once you toss it the first time.
