Thats rough mate. Anyone else been having luck on the vine for cats? I had a bit of luck on Monday at Lewisville but might have been just a fluke. I will try again on Monday and see if its like a real pattern or just lucked into some.
I am a rookie but the one thing I have learned with these guys is the shad/bait relationship is super strong. If you are not seeing tons of shad on the screen best to move on.

I still have a lot to learn but we usually do pretty good year round. Blues move around a ton chasing bait this time of year fellas. Me and Littlefeather marked fish in 15-45 ft last week but none were pushing bait so we didnt throw down until we found a group that was feeding. We graphed prolly 8 spots before we finally found hungry fish on a mid lake hump in 25 ft. They can be anywhere but I look for ambush structure like humps, ledges, and points in mid depth from 15-35 ft. This time of year Im fishing around sandbass 100% of the time and they feed pretty hard at sun up and sun down. When I get on the lake, first thing I do is establish a bait pattern. The way I do that is I go to the closest long point or ledge with a little wind blowing on it and I scan it to determine what depth the bait is holding on structure. Once you determine the depth the bait is relating to, you can move all over the lake and key in on structure at that depth. Not saying that my way is the best way but its the way I learned to find them and its what works for me. Good luck! Blue Catn aint easy!

My advice on the subject: DON'T BE AFRAID TO FISH SHALLOW. Last Saturday I made a quick trip to my local lake, I fished for an hour and a half from 730pm to 9pm and caught 8 blues from 3-10lbs. I was in less than 4' of water.

G-vine has been rough on me too. Over the past couple of years it's been really fun with really long dry spells. My little guy refers to it as skunk lake, 'cause we come away empty-handed so often. I'm still really learning, even ask Gato, Stubby and others, for advice all the time. The general consensus is that the 'vine is a "different" lake--lots of boat noise, serious fishing pressure, unreliable lake levels and what seems like really good forage for them. And if you hadn't noticed, the 'vine hasn't had catfish stocked since the early 70's. So, you're (we're) dealing with only natural catfish production. No over-population to harvest. My July-August baiting shallow, overnight, has been bringing them in. However, they seem to get lockjaw as the sun rises. I can see them on sonar, lingering around my baited holes, but I can't buy a bite. I do need to expand where I'm setting bait out, no question about that. I'm also thinking about overnight fishing too. My take is that you're going to have to know your stuff, to get reliable catches out there. However, when it's good, there's a fish on every cast.

Go west towards Denton creek. Look for the small humps. They are there. I dont know how to show a link but take a look at this link. And you will see 5 real good spots to load up.
