Additional thoughts to the OP on caliber.
I prefer carrying my 1911, which is 45ACP. I'm confident that a couple hits from that will stop an aggressor. Likewise, my revolver is a 38 special, and I load it with +P hollowpoints. It may not have the same stopping power as the 45, but again, I'm confident that a couple hits from that will stop an aggressor, or at least slow him/her down enough to the point that I can safely disengage and retreat. More importantly, I can reliably hit center mass with either of these firearms every time (I'm not an MOA shooter by any means, but I can hit a bad guy sized target).
You should have the largest caliber that you can comfortably carry AND reliably hit the target every time. Little calibers like 25ACP don't have much stopping power, but it's better to be able to put those shots into a bad guy than to miss with a 44 Magnum.

Most of the murders on real life crime shoes are with a .22. People have gotten carried away bigger is better.

There will always be evil and some people will continue to do very evil things no matter what laws are on the books. Several factors help spread an evil society. Just my opinion. #1. Social Media and certain web sites. #2. Taking God out of schools and government. #3. College and Universities that have an Agenda #4. Politicians that have an Agenda #5. Certain Video games that promote death and mass killings. #6. Home Life. These are just a few factors that I feel are effecting society in a very negative way. There will always be someone out there that is going to do something evil but maybe just maybe if there can be some positive factors in the ones I listed above life just might get a little better! Just my two cents.

I carry my Kimber micro or my Shield in 9mm. Was at a gun show yesterday and bought this awesome new holster that will carry both models. It has a removable clip so you put your belt through which makes it more convenient if you need to remove the gun for bank, post office ect. Can carry inside waistband which I do or outside. Also got the mag carrier for two mags. Doubt I will ever need the extra but wouldn't want to need it and not have it. Nothing against carrying a revolver but not for me. To bulky and prints to much. Also not enough round capacity. Anyone getting a new license and is going to carry get proficient with your firearm and draw capability. It should become second nature and muscle memory because if the time comes it needs to be a natural thing as your not going to have time to think much. If I can get a pic of the holster I will try to post it.

glock 42 or 43 are excellent for carry, I have the 42 that I carry in a cross draw iwb holster. try both at a range, there are a lot of good smaller semi autos out there and a ton of revolvers too. as said go to a range and rent a few and shoot them, then decide on what caliber you want to use.
as for holsters, I probably have 12 or more now for 3 pistols, reason being the search for the one that is most comfortable and does what I want it to. my preference is leather iwb (in the waist band). Which holster are you using with that 42 Hop? I also have about a dozen for a 43, and am always looking for the perfect one.

Most of the time I carry a G19 with an extended Taran Tactical Base. If it is hot and I am exclusively wearing shorts I will carry my G43 along with a Taran Tactical Base. If I need to dress up I might carry my Ed Brown Special Forces.

Find a gun you will carry. A smaller lighter shorter gun is typically harder to shoot. I would choose a gun with no manual safeties in 9mm
Sig 365 Glock 43 SW Shield
Stay away from Taurus, Bersa, and any other brand you have never heard of.
If you can jump up into a small full size gun such as a Glock 19 or Walther PPQ
9mm

9mm Why is that? Bersa and Taurus makes a quality weapon. Not impressed at all with glock.

In fact my CC weapon is a Taurus 9mm they make in a slim model so it's more comfortable to me than any other gun other than my wifes taurus 380 which is so small I can carry it in my pocket

I use a 125 grain Grim Reaper. It puts a pretty big hole in them like a .338 lapua plus leaves a good blood trail but you already knew that.
