So the teachers have rewritten history and math too now. I would've written the problem as 8/(2(2+2)) to make the terms clear. Just sloppy drafting on this one.

Really poorly written is what it is. Only the person who wrote it really knows what their intent was and can solve it. Anyone else is guessing the intent of poor math practice. Bingo. It's written like garbage. If you're writing a math formula, write it without the ambiguity.

The PEMDAS corollary: 8/2 is the same thing as 8X1/2 or 8X0.5 (so you just proceed from left to right when you just have multiplication and division remaining in the equation.) 16

It's written like garbage. If you're writing a math formula, write it without the ambiguity. But to write without ambiguity is oppressing the math problem's feelings. By writing with ambiguity the math problem can choose how it is to be solved. Duh.

It is considered an ambiguous problem. Both 1 and 16 are correct.

The PEMDAS corollary: 8/2 is the same thing as 8X1/2 or 8X0.5 (so you just proceed from left to right when you just have multiplication and division remaining in the equation.) 16 Youre exactly right.... if you have a TI-83 or better graphing calculator, enter the equation, an equals sign and what ever answer that you think it is. Then, press enter and it will either give you a 1 or 0; 1 being true or 0 being false. Thats what got me through calculus in HS.
