And your fire extinguisher. The new automotive freon is not cheap and worse it's flammable. I've watched videos and read were it's not that flammable and is hard to ignite. This might be true but a step the new service machines do that can't be skipped is no matter what repair we do, when the system is charged it makes you inspect for leaks inside the vehicle at the evaporators. It won't let you proceed until you push the button saying no leak was found. Sounds to me that the manufactures are concerned about fire risk.
The cost to charge a average SUV is about $20 in freon. The new R1234yf for the same size system will cost $260.

They have been trying to get this stuff out since 2012. It is already used in other countries. I now will have to buy machines for it since it is not backwards compatible.

Does it work better? Or is it an EPA change?

EPA Change. I sent some of my mechanics to an A/C refresher training course a few years back and I went along myself. They were talking about it then, and that the reason it was not out yet was because they couldn't get the evaporators built with enough integrity. They were worried about possible leakage into the cab since it was somewhat flammable.

Weve already sold 3 of the new machines and quite a bit of the little kegs of Freon here in Wylie. So far the main complaint by techs is it takes more than twice as long to perform the evac and recharge than the R134 systems.

Looks like even more reasons to hold on to my old truck as long as I can. The more sophisticated and I guess environmentally friendly these systems get the harder it becomes for your average person to self maintain things. I really wonder if its actually more economical or if its just another ploy to make it impossible for people to perform their own repairs so they have to take it to a dealership.

Does the 2019 Silverado use this stuff?
I hope not, I just bought the truck a few months ago.
