thought about getting a couple of Planer boards to try, friends of mine up north use them for Walleye fishing. thought try it here. questions are, how heavy of line, type of rod, the action of said rod, what to use to catch said fish, Plugs, A-Rigs, rattle traps, bottom bouncers, jigs, minnows, worms, spoons, top water, etc... how fast-speed to troll, they use a small out board kicker motor, or should use a trolling motor? how deep should a person look to try in also, may depend on what i am using, any ideas to try or not to try would be good. thanks.

i have talked and asked them, i was just wondering if anyone down here has used them or troll for them that may help save time learning to use the correct ideas to catch some, yes it going to be time on the water to see what works best, any ideas what may work better then others. they going for Walleyes over sand bass, hybrids, be different i would think some. guess i may try their ideas and burn some gas or drain a trolling motor battery or two.

I have had great success using planer boards strolling live gizzard shad on Buchanan. Threadfins won't live. I prefer shad 4-6" long but have used them 7-10" long with success. Go to Waterbugz.com and they have great information on adjusting depth etc.

Precision trolling is about putting the right lure at the right depth at the right speed. We've caught lots of stripers running Michigan Stinger Spoons 20 feet deep at 1.5-2.5 MPH.

What planar boards offer is the ability to run more lures to the left and right of the boat meeting those conditions.

Space and other conditions in the lakes we troll lead us to use mostly Dipsey Divers (or Walker Deeper Divers) to troll 6 lures at a time (3 left and 3 right) at depths from 10-30 ft. Planar boards would allow 6 more lures, but we don't have the space in the lakes we troll. Planar boards would also allow running lures at shallower depths to the side of the boat. We don't need to do that often.

Most equipment decisions are dictated by trolling, the target species, and the depth rather than using a Dispey, Jet Diver, or planar board. If you need to get to 10-30 feet deep, how are you going to do that. I don't recommend Dipseys with planar boards, so your options are jet divers, trolling sinkers, and weighted line (steel, copper, or lead core). We use Okuma and Daiwa line counter reels on heavy 6' Ugly Sticks.

When we hit a fishy spot, I like to turn the boat around and go back over it. Dipsey divers allow a much tighter turn radius than planar boards. Give them some thought. More details in this video:
