Get a Diawa or Shimano with the most ball bearings in your price range and a one-piece rod.

If your going to get a spinning i would recomend the shimano spirex and either a castaway or allstar med. action rod. This setup will run you about $110 but is very usable for a beginner and still used by many more experienced fishermen. It is a very good moderately priced setup. If thats a little more than you want to spend i would get the pfluger president rod/reel combo. Also ball bearings doesn't always = better reel.

just hit the garage sales and fleamarkets, find you a nice older model zebco 33 at a cheap price, then oil it, line it, and it should do you just fine.

They are actually all the same reel just different sizes. You can see the different line capacities on the website that u listed, that is the only difference. I have had several 2000's and that is what i would recomend. The larger one just seems too bulky to me. If you can go to your local academy and just check them all out, you don't have to buy from there though. They have another one called a Sahara. Also a nice reel, I think about the only difference is that it doesn't have the double handle or the quickfire trigger(a small trigger that you can grab on the reel that flips the bail open. the bail is the wire looking thing that you see that loops around the spool, you have to open it to cast). Again the 2000 model of that reel would probably be best. Hit up academy and check them both out and see if you like the double or single handle better.

I like it. It allows me to make a lot more casts than the regular flip it over yourself ones. However the double handle seems a little bulky on startup.

the speed of the 7.1:1 gearing has increased the number of casts I can make noticably....
I'm curious how this is so? Are you now pulling your lures faster? If so, has that been a good thing? I have several different reels with different gear ratios, and the only difference is some I have to reel faster than others. I still keep my lure speeds the same, thus I don't make any additional casts with one over the other.

I'd put a mitchel 308X(spinning reel) on a 6 or 6'6" M or MH Berkley Lightning rod...
Spool it with either 10 or 12 lb test and go from there.

Just tell the sales people what you will be using it for. Are you fishing for Bass or Baracuda? They can set you up with the right size rod and reel.

I've found that a lot of folks will cast out a worm, let it drop, pick it up again, then let it drop and if nothing will reel it in and then repeat. The time it takes to get the lure realed back in over and over in a days time can add up between a 6.2 and a 7.0 retrieve speeds. I didn't used to do this, and would work my lure all the back to the boat until recently. My catch rate has been much higher do to this and other reasons.

Ok, good explanation ^^^^
I was thinking along the terms of cranks and spinners and such.
