Fished below Denison Dam this morning and caught about a dozen fish, mostly stripers with a white bass and hybrid mixed in. Plus this guy, which at first I thought was a goldeye (which I have caught in the Red River before) but now am not so sure. This guy didn't have the visible teeth I remember goldeyes having and his dorsal fin is about halfway back instead of further toward the rear. It ate a Clouser minnow and went airborne immediately, fighting like a ladyfish with big jump after big jump, all the while putting a really nice bend in my 6 weight (which, in my experience, is how goldeyes fight). Only thing I can think of it might be would be a big gizzard shad, but not sure if they would hit my streamer and fight like this one did. Also, I always thought gizzard shad were more stocky and less streamlined. So, I ask the collective wisdom of the TFF, what is this? Sorry I don't have a better photo, was tough to juggle the fish, rod and phone without dropping one of the three in the river. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2019/07/full-82899-19699-photo_jul_27_7_36_24_am.jpg)

Huh. The first thoughts that ran through my head were 'bunker' or 'menhaden'. I half remember what that fish is, but would have to look it up to verify. *edit* my best guess is skipjack herring, which isn't what I was originally thinking. Interesting catch. https://nas.er.usgs.gov/queries/FactSheet.aspx?speciesID=489

Skipjack. I've caught them in Texoma. They have some nasty teeth.
John 21:3 Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee.

Goldeneye-teeth Skipjack-no teeth at least not those gnarly ones This is correct! Your fish is a skipjack. Fairly common to be caught below Denison Dam.

Google tells me its a skipjack herring. My first view was a salt water lady fish.

Thanks everyone. Also, just because I find it amusing, I also caught my first derp bass today. This guy hit a chartreuse/white clouser minnow. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2019/07/full-82899-19737-derp_2.jpg)

Skipjack herring. Commonly used for catfish bait further north. They love heavy currents below large dams.

Good Blue cat bait if they are a present forage.
