I have been eyeing some new spots on the river and decided to wet some lines.
I packed up the rods, the dog, the portable shade canopy and set my sites on the Trinity River.
Currently, both my PBs are held by fish that were caught out of the trinity so I knew the potential of what could come.
However, I had little to no idea that what would come out would be this size.
We set out to fish and stopped for a bite. We got out to the river with our food and laid a blanket under our canopy for shade.
I cast out three rods and proceeded to tear into a some food. After finishing, I told my girlfriend to man the rods because I had plans that involved a sunken tree that protruded out of the water and a bass rod. I walked down the bank and was about three casts in and about 200 yds away when I turned around to see my girlfriend hooked into a fish.
I picked up the pace and hustled back to our camp.
As I drew near, I felt as if my adrenaline gates burst. I saw what was the biggest fish I have ever seen.
She had gotten it all the way to the bank through two of its runs. I was so proud and my hands were shaking as I began to process what to do.
I knew our net was too small so I went for the weigh sling. Having gotten down into the water to try to laso it, the fish saw me and began re positioning itself for its next run.
As it started thrashing, all I can remember was how it's tail moved. It moved so quickly in the foot or two of water that it displaced water everywhere within a 5 foot radius.
It took off towards the river once more.
I told my girlfriend to ease off the drag, it kept going at an alarming rate.
We then tightened the drag. No difference. It was as if the pole was hooked onto a boat.
As it went screaming off to the right we went to the left, and finally the fish had been tuckered out to the point where we could get it in. I positioned the weigh sling in the water and cradled the fish. I zipped up the sides and we had done it. I tried to lift it and realized how much of a beast this thing actually was. It was heavy to the point that my girlfriend could barely hold it. I handed it over to her to grab my scale and it started to thrash again repeatedly slapping her on the leg

She did not think it was very funny. I held the scale up and there it was in all its glory.
