Best I can tell this is for the State of Virginia and it implies that Texas honors a Virginia permit.

I am pretty sure for the state of Texas you must actually go sit in the class and qualify on the range.

I think I was right. It does appear as though you can get a non-resident permit from Virginia online. The website says you need to check with your home state to see if they Honor a Virginia non-resident permit.

the liability that comes with getting one online would not be worth risking for me, got mine done in one saturday with lance vick at lake fork and I had my okie chl at the time, Tx. does not just let ya swap for theirs.

should you ever have to shoot someone you may have a huge problem with living here but going around the system to get an ltc.

Right Bob and Hop.

Texas honors many other states permits including Virginia. You can get a Virginia permit 100% online.

Which is scary because you can not know how to load a gun and get one. The Virginia thresholds and requirements are much lower than those of Texas and most other states but... Texas honors it. So its all legal and not any different than having your Texas permit.

Utah used to be the same way and TONS of states honored a Utah permit so you saw lots and lots of out of state Utah permits all over. They toughed up their standards now and it cannot be done online anymore. They went from issuing tens of thousands of non resident permits to almost none. Can be a money maker for the state. I mean lets say Virginia did 50k out of state permits. At $100 a pop thats over 5 million bucks for almost no expense to the state.

Tx. reciprocated with Okieland on the chl but Okieland was not really legal after I established an address in Tx.
no matter where an out of state comes from you still have to take the Tx. course/range time/test to get a Tx. ltc.

way too much liability attached with carrying.

The classes for me were enjoyable as I think most on here would agree. I've had a license since 2000 so I've had to renew a few times. Classes are reasonably priced as well.

I was surprised how easy it was in Alabama. Fill out application, pay $100 for 5 year permit. County Sheriff does background check before approval and he gets his $100. The county sheriff determines the fee (can be no more than $20 a year) and it all goes into his personal slush fund. Since the state took away their jail food money, it is harder for a sheriff to make a dishonest living in Alabama.

If Texas honors another states and you can get a Non-Resident permit from another state that Texas accepts... why would you need to get a Texas permit? Thats the point of those non-resident ones that are honored by many states. You get your Virginia permit and you are legal in like 30 states. Not a bad idea for those that travel.

State reciprocity is an interesting thing. Not sure it is still the case but when I moved here from Nevada, Texas honored Nevada permits. Like 35 states honored Nevada's. However Nevada did not issue Non-Resident permits and Nevada honored NO other states permits.

Are you just cheap or do you just like flirting with laws? grin Since you like this kind of "is it legal or illegal" discussion Dan, you would love the Saturday Texas LTC classes. Philosophy, statutes and laws, psychology, handgun use, you get to shoot 50 rounds at a silhouette, etc. Take your gal with you. Fun times!

Mine is still good for two more years. I have a Texas permit. BUT I did not get it till my Nevada one expired. AND it was NOT in fact fun. It was beyond boring.

But back to the OPs question. The training he is looking at is good for a Virginia Permit which he can get online and would be honored in Texas. But he cannot get his Texas permit with that online course.

Seems like the amount of time spent researching how to skirt the classroom portion could just be spent taking the class. It's only about 4 hours long.

Sounds like a lot if hoops to jump through just to express a constitutional right...
