The string / rope that releases the locking mechanism of my motorguide trolling motor broke. I've tried Academy, Cabelas and no luck. Does anybody know where I can find this string / rope locally. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks, alanis

My dad just had his break today on his minnkota. He went to lowes and got some rope that was close to the same size and said it works fine.

Al If you cant find one locally try using a Lawn Mower rope. If you want to get an OEM M/G T/M Rope try www.BobRidgwayRepair.com order it on line. Bazz

I just use some nylon rope the same diameter. To replace the handle if you look at the top there is a round plug. Pop that plug out, thread it on the new rope, tie a knot in the end of the rope and put the plug back in. You'll be good to go.

Alanis, I have starter rope from a small engine on my TM right now. But be aware that white rope has no UV inhibitors in it, and if you store your boat outside, it won't last long at all.
Get some extra.

Mine broke a couple weeks ago while on the water with trolling motor in the down position. It broke on the end so I was able to rethread it and tie it off. Rope is a little shorter now but I'm still using it. I agree with everyone here, there is nothing special about this rope, just go to Lowes and get some good nylon rope and replace it.

another tip if it happens on the water, a lot of motors NOT ALL have rope underneath the cowling so you can try to pull start your outboard i believe mainly on the smaller motors but you can always use that in a emergency. ive had to do that before and saved a bad fishing trip mark

Repalce it with a cable. Replaced mine 5 years ago, salt and freshwater, no problems.
Don't force it. Get a bigger hammer!

Thanks for the responses everybody. I now have some options and where to get what I need as well as some feedback to decide what is best.
Since I joined this forum I've read some good fishing advice, made some trades and purchased some rods at good prices. This forum rocks. It's the first thing I check when I log on.
Thanks again everybody.

I bought "airplane" cable at my local hardware store. It hasn't rusted in 5 years. It plus cable clamps about ten bucks.
