Did anyone notice that David Fritts has an old style flashed mounted next to his hd lowrances? Just curious if anybody knew why.

Tried and true technology. Those old timers can find the crazy good grass with a flasher.

Directly from him: A flasher does something no other instrument can do. It shows you the bottom exactly how steep the drop is, the little steps in the drop, and with a straight cone under you it does it in real time. They help you find the sweet spot.

Ditto what David Fritts said. I like it for the same reasons. Tight lines, keep safe and good luck. OH, it was what I grew up using, too.

Well the last time David Fritts was competitive the Flasher was new technology. Guys learned from him and surpassed him by using the new technology. And none of them use a Flasher.

I'm betting if you took two anglers each with identical fishing/catching skills and gave one a flasher only and the other some of the newer technology that they guy with the new tech averages out and catches more over the course of a season.

Not sure about that, one thing the flasher does that the new technology cannot match is you get an instantaneous reading with the flasher and there is a delay with the new stuff.

So how many fish will that quicker return put in the boat? That new tech is gonna show you so many intricate details on a spot plus allow you to video game fish at times.

I would agree with that, it's a no brainer. But he uses it as another tool. I have thousands of dollars in electronics and wouldn't want to give up any of it, but the flasher on my dash is the most accurate and dependable one.

I've had the old flashers - and I'm not sure I get this.

Dunno about Hummingbird/Garmin/etc. but Lowrance HDS has a real-time no delay sonar option "Amplitude Scope" that's similar to the old flashers except it's displayed vertically instead of a circular display format like the old flashers.

Old flashers used a neon-type bulb that was spun mechanically on a disk and lit up with the bottom and fish indications once per disk revolution. Talk about non-real-time compared to an LCD display's response.

I agree Mark. I have been through all of the stages of electronics and can tell you that every time the technology improves my fish catch rates get better. If you are structure fishing I can tell you more about that structure than any flasher will.

Retirement best job ever.

So I could put a flasher on my trolling motor and aim it horizontally and see fish in front of the boat in real time?

We were doing just that in the 70s. Only more at a 45 degree angle. Took a while to learn to interpret it but it showed cover on the steep river/creek drop offs as well with out having to run on top of them. Prehistoric sidescan sort of.
