I had a bunch of those reels back in the early 90's, and I sold them around 2000, as I recall. They were 5.1:1, good crankbait reels.

Not that old. The old ones have Shimano stamped on the sides. They were then made by Ryobi before Browning acquired them.

It's from the late 80s. Browning had the contract with Lew's back then but I believe Ryobi made them. It's a smaller reel than the standard BB1s were, probably a little better for light line and lures.
To me, the BB1NH was the best reel they ever produced. Lew's reels today are outstanding but I don't think they will hold up like the old ones did.

I don't think Browning ever had exclusive rights to the Lew's Speed Spool. Ryobi manufactured them till Zebco bought the rights in 1989. Zebco finally got rid of it's ownership and it was sold to its current owner in the last ten years.

Zebco really didn't care for the Lew's as it was pushing Quantum. They pretty much let Lew's die until this last group bought them.

I've got one from back in late 80's or early 90's....David Fritts popularized these with a 4.3 retrieve ratio as being perfect for deep cranking...
