Can anyone recommend a good starter saltwater reel or maybe a moderately priced rod/reel combo.
Been wanting to do some surf and flats fishing this summer. I have a couple cabelas combos that I use on my local pond and in the kayak but I dont think theyll hold up in saltwater. At least not the reels.
Also, would an 8 wt be enough for redfish?
Thanks

The rod weight is more about what you are throwing and the conditions you are throwing it in that what you are throwing at. I have caught a bunch of reds on my two weight, and a bazillion of them on my five weight. I've also caught them on my ten weight.........
Get a machined, anodized reel for salt water use, and be diligent about rinsing it in fresh water. Cast reels generally get a "cancer" after limited use and the powder coating bubbles off and oxidation takes over. A seven or eight weight would be a good all-round starter rig for salt water.

Piscifun Sword. About $50. Machined, anodized Aluminum. Stay away from cast Aluminum reels.
8 weight is fine. Pretty good for typical windy conditions. You dont need anything fancy for redfish, most casts arent very far.

Wow thanks this question eliminated my learning curve a provided a reasonably priced piece of gear. I have an old Scientific Angler made by Hardy Bros. reel I have paired with my8 wt that I used for pike in Colorado. Really didn't want to put it in the salt nor did I want to spend in excess of $300.00 on a low end Orvis or Lamson. Where can you find the Piscifun reels?
Thanks, Eirik

Fiblink is another Chinese-made reel you can buy cheap on amazon. I've got one on my 8wt and really like it. I have not yet hooked on to a fish that has tested the drag though. Fiblink
