Not many, but is it really that much of nusciance that we should take that risk? I dont think so.

If you run on plane without a kill switch you are an idiot. It is unfortunate that we need common sense laws to protect us from other idiots.

Was honestly expecting this law to be embraced by everyone on this forum. Shocked by some of these responses.

We have laws about drunk driving, murder, theft, etc. does that make us all safe? You really feel safer going to the lake because there is a law about a kill switch because that means all people will know about it and obey it? I personally dont think we need laws over something that is such a rare occurrence.

Yes those laws make us safer. Do they prevent 100% of tragedies, no.

Without the law there would be no way to penalize someone that is negligent. Without the penalty there is no deterrent.

Im not a fan of over-regulation and unnecessary laws that protect one from themself, but this law has no negative side and it attempts to protect the public.

Ive yet to hear a single argument as to why someone shouldnt wear a kill switch.

I agree it shouldnt be needed, but after reading responses maybe it is after all.

While this law is well meaning and I 100% believe a kill switch should be used anytime the motor is in gear, any law, regulation, etc. is going to have a negligible impact. People break laws all the time and anything that relies on obedience will be at best 80% effective regardless of penalty. The way to make sure people are truly safer is to make it automatic through technology. There have been a few threads on this in the past and a proximity sensor that enables when motor is in gear and automatically puts engine in neutral at idle if no driver is detected in the cockpit would eliminate the need to rely on someone to remember to connect the lanyard. I am sure some will disagree and have some excuse such as reliability, but someones forgetfulness or negligence with this situation puts other peoples lives at risk. The comments on here about seatbelts and helmets do not apply as those only protect the operator, where this protects innocent bystanders.

On a less serious note, I am currently contemplating how to make headlights turn off automatically on the ramp........

Laws are the only way to attempt to fix stupid. But you can't fix stupid, that's why tickets are still written for not wearing a seat belt.

You fix stupid with education, not monetary fines. Its about money. Now, if you made a person spend a weekend in a classroom for a seatbelt fine, vs a dollar amount, I think that would be a viable way to educate. The fines are simply revenue for an already fed system. I give the government my tax money. Without complaint. These laws should not be money generators.

No impact for me since I always wear my life jacket and kill switch. I have a kill switch on all my life jackets so if I'm tossed overboard the passenger can start the boat with their kill switch. Traditional life jackets for the cooler weather and auto-inflates for warmer. For me it's just been a personal decision. I can see where the law enforcement part irritates many. Biggest impact will be on party boaters as I see it as a way to stop and search.

There has been a campaign to get people to use their kill switch for over 40 years, and it hasn't worked. I think that proves you cannot fix stupid. If education was the way, why does Texas spend millions of tax dollars every year to get people to wear their seat belts. Remember "click it or ticket"?
Believing laws are about revenue is a stupid idea.

You can see with each generation more and more people are willing to give up their freedoms.
