Anyone have some insight on the MR. Crappie Slab Daddy Solo Combos?

[Linked Image]

Really more interested in the operation of the reel...I realize they are not made for actual casting, and more akin to using a cane pole where you are dipping/pendulum swinging where you want the bait to go - to do that, from what I can tell (and could be wrong), with these Solo reels, you strip off X amount of line prior to placing the bait where you want...but do you then have to reset the drag or is there a happy medium of drag set between striping off the line and hook set? Also, when landing a fish, is the reeling action effective?

More so inclined to use a light spinning reel, bait placement just seems easier, and better reeling should it be needed would be a bonus, but not sure of a good/low cost model to pair up with a 9-10 foot rod/pole for the same method of fishing - and primarily from the bank. The spinning reels on the Lews/MR Crappie Slab Shaker combos look fragile, at least from the photos I've seen - certainly not stuck on that particular brand so open to other combo suggestions via Amazon/Acadamy/Bass Pro - Cabela's...about my only prerequisite would be two piece for ease of storage and transpiration.

cheers

How'd you like the rods?

There is a Youtube video of how Wally Marshall uses it. I have a couple of these reels & the size of the crappie depends on how I use the reel to retrieve the fish. If it`s a smaller fish I grasp the line ,strip ,lift & swing , for larger fish I reel then NET.

I did search for some "in use" vids on YT but never really found any with that particular reel style - will have to search again. Seems like a fun way to fish, certainly goes back to the cane pole. Thanks for the info.

I have had 1 for a couple of years now and while it's effective the reel doesn't feel natural to me. It's more like a fly reel than anything. I have the 11' rod and I like that, it helps to get to the far sides of trees. I got it at academy for$20 so I guess it's worth it but the reel takes some getting use to.

I have the reel and I consider it a line holder only. I would not want to be reeling in a fish from 20ft of water with it. I purchased 4 of them for $4 apiece from the Academy outlet store four months ago. It is basically a cheap fly reel.

Yeah. that was pretty much my take on them as well...Never even considered the deeper water, just pulling them out of 5-10 feet from 25-30 feet away seemed like that would be enough of a beating.

Thinking I may lean towards a BPS Crappie Maxx 10ft rod with a Pflueger TRI25X.

Thanks for the reel info!

Just fine, have landed a few 2-4 lb bass with it while perching.
