When talking about lakes here in Texas, does anyone else find themselves making that statement? Seems like every lake that I fish or have fished that statement applies. What do you think is the major cause that a lake is not like it used to be?

Lots of factors. Human encroachment, more fishing pressure, more people with better fishing equipment. Strains of largemouth bass that are more finicky. Also your own "nostalgia" glasses. I would say a little of all kinds of factors like this make a big picture

lakes have their up and down cycles with a lot of variables involved....Guntersville and chickamauga went through some lean years after they sprayed the grass now grass is back and they are good fishing lakes...falcon was best lake in the country when the water was up in the bushes and the fish could hide from the gar and cormorants...T-bend and rayburn back during the years right after they had been impounded and there was plenty of cover in the lake, the fishing was unbelievably good....
unfortunately grass is the best cover for revitalizing an aging fishery but our DNR allows them to spray the lake to please a few hundred lakeside homeowners and ruin the fishing for thousands...

Lakes change over time. I can't really say that any of the lakes I fish are "tougher" or less productive than they used to be, but I'm not catching them in the same areas or with the same techniques in many cases.

Maybe the angler isn't what they used to be? Have you failed to adapt? Are you stuck in the same routine that used to work?

AMEN!!! People damn sure dont any courtesy anymore! Use to when I fished offshore places before the electronics got better people just looked at you like you were crazy for fishing out in the middle of the lake. Now they pull up on you and mark your spot and when you leave they fish it.

Very much this, I fished a lake Tuesday that was awesome, haven't heard a peep about it in a long time, the old adage loose lips sink ships is very true.

I think a lot of people forget about all the tough fishing trips in the past and just remember the good days. With that said I've had some great days this year.

I think its just a excuse for not having the willingness to adapt. Its very easy to go to a lake and go to the same places and throw the same baits basically just fishing history. I will guarantee you that on any lake at any time there is always a good population of bass that are active and ready to bite but you just have to be open minded in order to find these fish and catch them.

Agree
Lake cycle from good to Ok to tough. But they always seem to bounce back.
Yes there are not any secret spots anymore thanks to east to read mapping and GPS and sidescan. But the fish are still there. Bigger fish cycle also so a lake can go from a lot of 5 lbs to a lot of 1 lbs on off years but they grow up.
Anyone who says it isn't as good as the old days didn't fish much in the 70s and 80s. The tough lakes now are better than the good ones back then.

In my 25 years of hard bass fishing I have seen many cycles on many lakes. A lot of our North & West TX lakes are fishing super tough now because of all the high murky water. That said, our lakes in my part of the world have been off the chain good the last 3 years. Just my .02!
