I posted this in the motor section but that area doesn't seem to get much traffic. I purchased a used Skeeter FX21 with a 250 SHO in February. Motor had approx 175hrs on it when I purchased it from a dealership. I've put about 25 hours on the motor since. This past weekend it was just a dog getting out of the hole. First time I've ever experienced that with this boat. I put it on the trailer and headed home. When I got home I let the boat set and checked the oil. Sure enough oil was a little high. Long story short I took it back to the dealership because it is under warranty. They changed the oil and it runs like a champ again. They are telling me that I am idling to much and not running it hard enough. I know the SHO like to be run hard but I thought this making oil issue was something that was resolved after break in? HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS AT THIS NUMBER OF HOURS? It really concerns me that this engine is doing this. Makes me really wonder about its longevity. Also, I'm not sure how I can run it any different on lakes like Palestine and Fork. As you know there are areas that you simply have no option but to idle.

I have a Yamaha 4S. If it was making oil, Id be concerned. Idling, running hard, anything in between....it shouldnt have so much blow by that fuel dilutes the oil significantly enough to be noticed on a dip stick.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Mine has over 500 hours on it and still runs like a top. Being an O/B, I know that its always one run from popping but it is what it is. My mechanic told me the same thing - they like to be run hard - but, if I did an "abnormal" amount of idling in the day then I should try to make a decent run before I put it on the trailer. I fish Fork and Palestine and I can always make a mile or two run at the end of the day to let it do whatever it does...

Rings probably didn't set right at break in, run it like a scalded dog.

What year is the motor? If I remember right the heads were recalled and replaced for motors through sometime in 2011. If you get the serial number off your motor just about any dealer that sells Yamaha will be able to tell you if it's a recalled motor.

Take a brand new modern car engine, slap 140 degree thermostats in it and it will make oil too if you don't run the piss out of it to break it in.

It wasn't broken in correctly or ran hard enough during it's life. Those motors need and want to have their "legs stretched".
If you baby the motor during break in or "lug" it around all the time you could have issues.

Run it at max rpms until you get it broken in. Will never make oil again after that.

Run it at max rpms until you get it broken in. Will never make oil again after that. This and run it wot trimmed down all the way. Load it up and get some heat going. Most people break them in like a two stroke and as said above when you do that the rings don't seat.
Retirement best job ever.

IDK ? damn sure don't like the feeling I get when I check the oil Mine is a 2016 as well. No recall on that engine. I had the dealership send me a printout of the hours. There is no doubt that it has not been run correctly. Lots and lots of idle time before I purchased it. I should have looked at the numbers before I purchased it, but it wouldn't have meant anything to me at the time. The dealership I purchased the boat from sold it new, serviced it, took it back as a trade in, then sold it to me. They knew this was an issue obviously. The head mechanic told me the same as you guys are saying, run it hard. He said the engine is fine just needs to be put through the proper heat cycles. I hope he's not just blowing smoke.
