We look for satellites and the occasional Borealis flare.

Still pretty chilly up yonder.

I did a 7 day trip up there in 2007. Two full days paddling out. 3 days camping. 2 full days paddling back. We were way out there. Next time I will cut back on the paddling out and back and spend more time in one area camping and fishing. Some of those portages we did were a real b. One of the best, wildest places left in the US.

Yes, we've refined the trip to really focus on fishing. Our early trips we did a lot more traveling. We've zeroed in on what we think to be the best body of water in the area and just get there as quickly as we can and set up a base camp to fish from.

I have never been to the Boundary waters, but have been to several very remote Fly-ins with portage lakes. The feeling of being all alone, in beautiful wilderness with lots of unbothered fish cannot be matched. Have a great trip and boil that water...

Yes, you do have to get permits. They aren't super hard to get if you plan ahead. We applied for ours in January. We are going the first week of June which is a bit on the early side so we probably could have waited much longer and still got permits. If you go during a peak time though (mid june-early august) you'd want to apply well in advance.

Am jealous. Four trips for me and high adventure for sure.
We learned early June, on average, would find those big smallmouth shallow in pre-spawn.

Hang the food pack at night high as you can and have fun!

Wow, this looks amazing. Would love to plan something like this to do with my kids one day when they can paddle the canoe, work the net and I can just cast and drink beer.

Beer is tough up there. It's impossible to keep cold, not to mention portaging a 30 pack up and own a mountain with a canoe on your back is no fun! Gotta go with some with a higher booze to weight ratio. roflmao

Water is probably cold enough to cool drinks. We'd have beers and such in a fish basket and drop it down a bit behind the canoe/kayak/boat. But, we had 12-15 folks to haul stuff.

BTW, my cousin guides up there.
