Fellas- Had an absolutely stellar spring season on the Lake Fork and Taylor Rivers in the Gunnison Valley. Thought I'd share a few photos while runoff is temporarily ruining my piscatorial pursuits. I'm betting most any serious fly angler knows where this guy came from...the Taylor C&R. He ate a #22 red D-Midge. And if you've never fished the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River, it's flat out awesome. I can't wait to throw giant tan and gold Chubby Chernobyls at big browns and 'bows lined up against the bank after runoff subsides! And it's not just the Taylor C&R that has big fish potential, but the entire lower Taylor as well. This guy ate a #20 grey RS2.

Thanks for the post. Hope the good snow pack improves the health of the fishery across your state. Our favorite place to fish/hike/camp.

You are killing me man. It will be August or September before I make it to Colorado or New Mexico this year. Our mid July trip isn't going to happen. Thanks for the pics

Thanks for the post. Hope the good snow pack improves the health of the fishery across your state. Our favorite place to fish/hike/camp. With the amount of snow the Gunnison Basin got this winter, once we can get past runoff the fishing should be off the charts good. This would be the summer to head to southwestern Colorado for sure.

I saw a funny stat that shows the Gunnison and Upper Rio are currently at "7,000 percent" of snowpack compared to last year. Duh, there was no snow left on May 12th last year! I know you are primarily Gunnison drainage (nice book, even if it pissed a lot of guides off), do you get to the COnejos/Upper Rio much? I do a trip there over July 4th every year - last year was September flows, spooky fish, and PLatoro was letting about 20CFS out. This year may still be runoff. Your thoughts?

Jeff- I honestly didn't realize I pissed any guides off with the book. I know about 15 local guides personally and not a one of them had anything but compliments on the book. Maybe someone will chime in here and let me know who I pissed off. I've had a grand total of one nastygram in the three years since the book came out, and that was from a guy in Montrose that didn't even tell me what he objected to. As far as the Conejos and the Upper Rio, they are excellent fisheries and I'll get to visit both of them this July (late in the month.) I would be pretty worried that July 4th will still be dirty water. I know it will be in the Gunny Basin (at least on the major rivers), and the snowpack down there is similar to ours. I'd aim more toward the middle to the end of the month to be safe. The fishing should be tremendous once high water retreats. I hope you have a GREAT trip down there. Post up some pics so the rest of us can be jealous! Doug
