Bass fisherman here and not in the slightest bit a skilled or knowledgeable saltwater angler. I'm headed down to Port A here at the end of June. I would like to fish while I'm there, either the surf or jetties. Spanish Mackerel seem more my speed of fishing chunking lures and not watching bait. How easy are these fish to find and catch for a beginner? Is Port A a good place to fish for them? better times of year than late June?

I was catching them in the surf 3-4 weeks ago on PINS casting a heavy spoon looking for Jacks. You should be able to find them in June at the Port A jetties. Work your way to the end of the jetties casting spoons and gotcha lures. Bring several lures as you might get snagged on rocks or lose them to toothy critters. If you don't find the Smacks your likely to find other fish willing to hit your lure,

I use a wire leader because of their teeth. They will steal your lure in a heartbeat if you are using mono or fluoro leaders.

I caught a bunch at the end of the port A jetty. I used small 1/4oz sliver casting spoons. I use a section of knottable wire leader to prevent cut offs. Good luck.

I throw a 3/4 oz Johnson Sprite gold soon all over saltwater. I use it in the bay, beach, jetties, and offshore. You should be able to catch smacks, jack crevalle, and ladyfish with them in port a in June. You will also have a good chance at redfish.

Anybody ever throw crankbaits? Deep diving 10-20ft cranks with any luck catching anything?

Big silver rattletraps with blue or black backs can be killer!

If the surf is down get some piggy perch and surf fish for trout. You will need a couple of dozen. Free line INTO the current/wind. Change bait after a few casts. If that is not possible then go ahead and fish the piers or surf for whiting. They are an underapriciated fish when fried. Nothing wrong with smacks but to me they arent worth going to the end of the jetty. Btw cook smacks fresh.
