Is it normal to not have good hook sets while fishing from a yak? I have lost more good fish this year from my yak than I ever have from my boat. Is this normal or just in my head? Both fish that stick in my mind would be considered trophies, both on a stick bait, both threw the hook on their first jump. Fishing from a yak is requiring a lot more adjustment than I thought it would.

Might want to start using braid or slightly stiffer rod with more backbone.
Just one more cast!

This is where standing from your boat can really help. I stand to fish more than I sit and it helps get more toque on my hook sets.

Fishing from a yak is requiring a lot more adjustment than I thought it would. In breezy conditions it is harder as your kayak is much more affected by the wind than a boat. Its like trying to set the hook while fishing from a merry-go-round. I keep my paddle in my lap at all times so I can make adjustments but still find myself out of position a lot.

Both of the big fish I have lost, I could feel the boat pull towards the fish during the hook set. Fish would take the first run, come out of the water and spit the hook. Oddly enough, other than just getting surprised and missing the bite, my hook up ratio on jigs and worms seems to be fine.

I use light wire hooks, which are easier to set than a heavy wire hook.

Might want to start using braid or slightly stiffer rod with more backbone. This exactly. Going straight braid and/or braid mainline was the cure for me.

Is it treble hooked lures or finesse jigs or spinnerbaits where you are having some issues?

If I hook one on a worm, I catch it. Heavier line, better rod. The fish Im losing are on lighter gear. Big fish on light gear is fun, but they can be a challenge to hook-up. One way to split the difference is to have fast action rods. The fast action tip stiffness gives you a bit more "snap" on the initial hookset... this compensates a little for the lack of backbone from rod body. Also, as mudman63 said, lighter wire hooks help a lot. Personally, I use all medium/heavy bass rods. I don't pay a ton for rods but will pay up to get an entry level graphite rod ($40 to $60). The graphite rods are thinner and much lighter... to me, a medium/heavy graphite rod feels lighter than medium fiberglass rod.

I have a hook set from heck. My buddy laughs at how hard I set the hook. If it's a little fish and close to the yak you better look out because fish are flying. I rarely have a fish come unbuttoned. I use the same equipment on a boat, kayak, or bank. I don't recommend changing your equipment to kayak fish. Kayaks can move pretty easy but a good fast and hard hook set will work.

I do the same. My buddy used to get so ticked at me when I would jerk the lips off a fish when we fished out of a 12' jonboat and 10' pond prowler. 25 years later I can still hear it "dammit, if you throw me out of this, I'm kicking your arse". LOL

Is it possible you are using poor quality hooks? I know brands vary in quality a on, on all my salt lures i change the hooks for top quality owner, gamakatsu or mustad .
