Has anyone ever tried anything like this? Just curious how well it works before I buy the stuff and try to set it up.

I think it's a neat idea if anything, I could see it in some form getting produced commercially

It's a very interesting design that seems like it will work well. I like that it's manual. I agree with CADD, it could easily be produced and marketed commercially. The guy should patent the design and sell it to a manufacturer.

However, the best application really depends upon where you fish. For me, I fish under a lot of trees and pedal under marina ramps from time to time. So, I cannot have a pole sticking 8' in the air. Also, if I'm shallow enough to use a stake out pole, I also like to use it as a push pole. Because of these reasons, I have an 8' split pole that I use from time to time. Honestly, I don't even use it all that much... I will nose onto some structure or use a brush grabber way more than I pull out the pole.

I think it'll work. I've seen a couple different brands that are available to purchase similar to this design but I'm not remembering the names.

For me I prefer a stake out pole. When I have something in the air at the rear of the kayak I will inevitably catch it with a cast almost every trip. I came across a 3/4"x6' fiberglass tree stake at Walmart on clearance for 7 bucks. Glued a PVC tee to the top and tied on a lanyard and that's my stake out pole. The 6' pole works fine for me in the marsh. When I'm lake fishing I use an anchor.

You get out of it what you put into it!

I have this for my Hobie PA14 and love it. Cost less than $100 to make it too.
