I Just got out of the hospital after a 13 day stay.
During the stay it was found that I had staff infection on my 14 month old pacemaker/defibrillator.
So the older one was removed from my left chest on Monday and then on Friday a new one was installed into my right chest.
I just don't know of anyone else that has had one taken out and a new one put back in.
Come to think of it, I know these batteries have like a 10+ year life span, but what happens when a battery needs to be changed?

On another note, I have now had 2nd replacements on both knees and now the defib/pacemaker.
I seem to excel at re-replacements.

Just thought I'd see some of you guy's experiences with this--

I'm still on my first one, but when the battery gets to a certain level it will be replaced. The way my cardiologist explained it was - they will make a small incision, disconnect the wires, remove the old one and plug in a new one. You'll still have to deal with a surgical cut, but the recovery is easier because the wires don't have to get "set" into the heart and you should have almost full use of your left arm right away.

Thanks PGR for that info-

Both arms, shoulders and groin, on only one side luckily, are sore-

My father in law had his first one at age 22. He is 81 now and he is on his 12th one. Two were actually recalled and had to be replaced. The others were battery issues. He just had the last one replaced last year and the doctor told him it should be good ten years. He also said with the amount of scar tissue they are running out of places to attach the wires. Good luck and hope you feel better soon. On a side note he is one of 18 kids, 9 girls and 9 boys. The oldest brother lived to 43 and the oldest sister made it to 70. He is going great and tells me that he has made it this long by never raising his voice or getting stressed out. He is a master at both. Me not so much.

My Dad has had a few pacemakers replaced because of dead batteries . He told me the pace maker beeps when the battery is low , he said its kinda weird when the noise comes from inside your body and you can hear it-feel it when the room is quiet .

Its also eerie when I went for checkups at the cardiologist and the nurse sets a laptop up an then manipulates the pacemaker and I feel, well, its hard to explain how it feels, but the fact that someone not touching me is playing with my heartbeat is kinda weird-

I must REALLY trust them.

That would be...weird is the nice way of saying it.
