Hey TFF, So recently I have been catching a few fish flipping Beaver style baits...But also LOSEING a few good ones as well! I normally don't use a FLIPPING HOOK but wanted to give it a try... The bite has been a little strange: where if I let the Bait "Soak" the fish slowly swim off with it...I set the hook and the fish feel pinned but then comes off! They aren't really biting it when unless it sets for about 30 Seconds 1st... Or The Opposite happens: She is hooked very deep all the way in the Gullet/Choppers...I have managed to unhook each fish without any dieing. But thinking of switching back to a 5/0 EWG Gammy worm hook WHAT ARE THE REAL BENIFITS OF USING A FLIPPING HOOK? (When and WHERE) I'm giving the Flipping hook a try because it seemed more "Streamlined" and got "hung up" less fishing in and around weed patches and standing reed beds I'm using 20# Floro...didn't see the necessity for Braid...plus I hate it for most applications besides Frogs and some Topwaters So as you can see it the Photo...the hook keeper is pulled all the way down the neck-It was secure prior to setting the hook I promise! And when I got the bait back in after the fish got off- I tried to push it back up and it was a bastard to move so it must of been a good one to pull it down that far. And of course when it moved it back up the heat shrink was lose so it just kept sliding up and down with each fish...but I only had 1 hook with me. Anyway I think the Hook keeper got caught on the inside of the fishes mouth and pulled down??? Anyone ever seen this or experienced it? Good news is I managed to stick one later but was a little faster on the hookset!

Those are notorious for doing that. I switched to owner jungle flipping hook or owner jungle wide gap. Zero issues now

You're not feeling the bite. Are you using Tungsten, fluorocarbon, and a good sensitive rod?
Flipping hook works well for tight/heavy grass because it slides in with a lower profile. I personally have more confidence on an EWG, so that's what I throw 99% of the time.

Personally I only like a straight shank if I'm flipping close quarters to the boat. If I'm casting or flipping long distance, I like the offset jungle wide gap

With the muddy water everywhere, I'd go straight braid for a while.

Tie a snell Knot with that style hook and your hook up ratio will increase. Love him or hate him Mike Ike has a good little video about how to tie it and why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myJeebeEH10
See you on the lake and have a great day!

Using s Dobyns Champ 735 20# Segar Inviex Floro YES-Using Tungsten Theres a chance youre hooking up with whisker fish, grinnel or big drum on those ones that bite after its set for a while. The original question of benefits of a flipping hook is that theyre heavy wire and wont open up on a big fish most of the time. That owner jungle is outstanding if you tie any knot other than Snelling it, braid or fluoro will eventually cut through the epoxy if you snell it, have to watch it and replace the hook if youre catching a lot of fish. I use it on some light flipping. You need to be aware that a regular knot can slide down the eye and if it makes it to the notch or epoxy (that hook is not a welded eye), it can cut the line on a big fish. The regular trokar flipping hook with the eye welded has a little notch that will also cut your line if the knot slides down fighting a big fish. For heavy flipping Snelling with braid Ive gone to the Trokar Monster flipping hook, that thing is a beast, welded eye, heavier wire, and no notch . Heres all 3 side by side, trokar monster first, regular trokar second, owner jungle last.

And heres what a 12 lb blue does to a trokar flipping hook when you horse it out of some nasty stuff.

Only hook I haven't bent is either gamakatsu monster wire and both the owner wide gap plus and owner jungle wide gap. In my opinion, the big wide gaps don't bend as easy as a flipping hook. They flex a little more.

Just IMO, I've experienced the same thing often, and I started leaning away from using a straight shank flipping hook with flouro. I feel there is too much stretch in flouro to get a good hook point penetration through the plastic and into the fish. Plastics differ, but my experience has been this, so I started using Gama superline EWG hooks with flouro.
Also, you may have an older version of that Gama flipping hook. They "welded" the hook keeper to the shank on the newer version. You'll still at times experience the plastic sheath sliding down, but you honestly can just rip that off and use the metal piece as the keeper.

I use H2O flipping hooks lately. I had been using Trokars, but they seem to rip a big hole in the bass mouth, causing lost fish. The H2O hooks have a good barb and keeper.
Another must for flipping, is braid...and dont stop reeling till the fish hits the carpet.

As posted above. Snell the hook! I like the Owner but use Gama hooks to. If Im making longer cast or pitching I opt for a extra wide gap worm hook. But for close quarters flipping they work great.
