Spend the weekend at PK state park and was able to get on the water Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM. Spend the majority of our time fishing mid lake in clear but stained water with visibility of about 2 feet. This was much more stained then when I visited a year ago. Water temperature started out at 53 degrees and warmed to 58 degrees by the end of the day. We spent the first half of the day fishing the back of a northwest protect creek. Caught male bass in the 1 to 2 pound range about 10 to 15 feet off the bank. Realizing these fish were all pre-spawn, we started focusing on the middle of the creek where we are able to hook up with some 2 to 4 pound females.
About 1 PM we decided to do some sightseeing and took a ride to Hells Gate. After being there for 2 minutes I noticed the long creek feeding it. Idled to the back and caught 2 more pre-spawn males along the edge of the creek channel. Water temperature on the shallow humps was 59 degrees but as you got into the channel in the back of the creek water temp dropped to 55 degrees. This was probably do to lots of runoff from the recent rains. Something to consider when looking for bedding areas.
Spent the last two hours of the day fishing back in a different feeder creek mid lake. This creek ran north to south. Wind shifted from SW to NE during this time and seemed to slow the bite. Caught 2 males up close to the bank that seemed to be sunning.
Total number of fish caught was around twenty with the biggest being 4.9 pounds. All fish caught on 1/4 Texas Rig creature baits. Seems the areas we fished were a week or two away from the fish starting to bed and bigger fish moving up.
With a 50 boat Media Bass tournament going on, we had zero boat pressure. This was a nice break from the boat traffic of East Texas. I would highly recommend a trip to PK for anyone looking for a nice, scenic, and relaxing weekend.
