I would take a different approach. I’d buy one style of bait for the area I’m fishing and learn just that bait for a few trips. Say for example you want to learn to throw a top water frog and now is the perfect time to fish a frog (post spawn). I’d throw that frog a few trips until I became comfortable with it. Once comfortable I’d buy a second bait and repeat the steps. This provides two benefits: It forces you to learn a lot about one particular bait; it prevents you from buying a bunch of baits you will never use.

There are many of approaches you can take.

welcome You have a boat or kayak or bank fishing ? You already have rod and reels ? It's an endless process Barry so take it slow and easy. You can get a starter kit at Walmart or you can go whole hog at Academy, Bass Pro or Cabelas. Depends on how far you wanna go. You're at a good place to learn though.

Not sure I'd start with a frog though. Harder bait to work, and hook set ratio is going to be way down for someone new. When I want to practice with a frog, I do it at a friends pond that isn't fished much so I have a captive audience and can get a bite every 10 minutes for the first hour. Build some confidence. Chatter bait or square bill is much easier to fish early on IMHO. Also a drop shot is deadly and skill level is simple as simple can be. If you have grass, a swim bait is easy to fish and works well. I've only been bass fishing last 4-5 years so still learning, but those baits were how I got going.

good luck

I would buy a very limited spectrum of baits. 90 percent of the people on the forum only use 20 percent of the [censored] they have in there boats(including me). The rest is just [censored] weighing down your boat.
Pick your brand and get some type of fluke, some type of trick worm and some type of creature bait. Dont buy a bunch of crazy colors. Stick with watermelon, Green Pumpkin for 95 percent of your color. Dont buy plastic just because its on sale(That is where we have all that 80 percent of the [censored] we don't use!)l

Phenomenal advice. I would just add Senko type plastics to his list.

Only need Green Pumpkin Senkos. They can be c rigged, tx rigged, wacky rigged, flipped, punched, weightless, weighted. The single most versatile bait ever made. And they work.

Agreed. I would stick with plastics to get started. They are cheap and versatile.

I would start with a bag of the following.

Worm Hooks
1/8 bullet weight
1/4 bullet weight
3/8 bullet weight
Watermelon Lizards (w/ red flake)
Plumb Lizards
Watermelon Senko
Natural Red Senko
Red/Green 9" ribbon tail worm
Purple 9" ribbon tail worm
Natural color Fluke
White Fluke
3" Natural Color Swim Bait (Berkeley has them pre-rigged)
4" Natural Color Swim Bait (Berkeley has them pre-rigged)

You a buy all of this for about $50 and fish all summer long. From here you can decide what you and your water likes. You can pick up a couple spinner baits and crankbaits over time although these can be difficult to throw from the bank.
