Have never caught a crappie in my life, and live in San Antonio. What lake around here has crappie, and enough that an amateur like me could catch one.

Crappie dock at Canyon Lake at entrance to Cranes Mill Park. Canyon Bait House about a mile before you enter park has minnows.

I used to catch them at Canyon Lake mentioned in above reply, there is a fishing pier there that I most fished at night with a submersible light. However, since Medina lake level filled up in past few years, Joe's Marina has been great for crappies as well as hybrids. However, there is a daily fee to fish there or you can buy annual fishing pass for 150.
